Spicy Cajun Cabbage Recipe

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • teaspoon ground cumin
  • teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small head cabbage, finely shredded (about 5 cups)

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine chili powder, thyme, smoked paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, onion powder, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until the garlic softens and becomes fragrant.
  4. Stir in the shredded cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage starts to soften, approximately 5 minutes.
  5. Add the spice mixture to the skillet and stir well to combine. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the cabbage is tender and the spices are evenly distributed, about 3 more minutes.
  6. Once the cabbage is cooked to your desired tenderness, remove from heat and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

  • The amount of spices can be adjusted based on your preference for heat and flavor.
  • Ensure the cabbage is finely shredded for the best texture. Aim for about 5 cups of shredded cabbage.

I was intrigued by the enticing flavors, but I wanted a refreshing side dish. I decided to combine the spices with a mixture of mayonnaise and sour cream, and added a touch of sugar and vinegar. The outcome completely impressed both my boyfriend and me. The Cajun flavors were absolutely delicious! This dish paired perfectly with BBQ chicken.

Review Update: Success! My friend and I managed to finish all the portions. I incorporated boiled Yukon Gold potatoes, red baby potatoes, and chicken sausage that I had previously prepared for a crab boil. These were added towards the end and steamed together with the cabbage. The dish turned out to be a satisfying main course. While I didn't have cumin on hand, I did utilize all the other spice seasonings as per the recipe. The result was incredibly tasty! The dish had a nice kick from the crab boil, making it spicy yet very enjoyable. I will certainly be making this again, and next time, I'll use potatoes and sausage from a crab boil once more.

Review rewritten: I absolutely adored the spice mix in this recipe! I followed the instructions closely and used Napa Cabbage, along with a mix of gourmet mushrooms including Mitake, King oyster, and Pearl oyster - perfect for a mushroom lover like me. To elevate the flavors, I also included a splash of rice vinegar and a bit of Mirin rice wine. The result was absolutely delicious, and I will definitely be making this dish many more times. Thank you!

I followed this recipe with a few modifications. I included sautéed celery, carrots, fresh garlic, and onion for added flavor. To amp up the spice, I increased the amount of chili powder as I didn't have any other spicy ingredients on hand. I also incorporated soy sauce and cooked seasoned chicken breast. Instead of butter, I opted for olive oil. The result was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be making this again.

I prepared this recipe for 4 people and it was a breeze to follow. The taste was simply delightful! It paired perfectly with the black-eyed peas we had. For those watching their calorie intake, each serving came out to 113 calories. I used 240g of yellow onion and 465g of savoy cabbage as the main ingredients. Hopefully, this information is helpful for you!

Great experience! I added some thinly sliced sautéed chicken to make it a complete meal. I would consider reducing the amount of cumin slightly next time.

I love incorporating cabbage into our meals regularly, so I'm constantly on the lookout for new ways to prepare it. The spice mix in this dish was absolutely bursting with flavor. It surprised me that some were concerned it would be overly spicy or have a gritty texture, but mine turned out neither way. I suspect that perhaps not enough cabbage was used by some, which could alter the final taste. I simply sprinkled the spice mix over the cabbage, covered the pan with a lid for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld beautifully. We enjoyed it alongside some (vegan) Mac & Cheese.

2.25.21 ... I tried the Spicy Cajun Cabbage dish. Despite many reviews mentioning it was too spicy, I decided to reduce the amount of spices in half. The result was subtle yet effective, just like me. Since I am sensitive to thyme, I also halved the amount of thyme in the recipe. I loved the flavor so much that I'm planning to use this seasoning on other dishes as well.
