4-Bean Baked Beans Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans, drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, drained
- 1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
- 8 ounces bacon, cut into small pieces
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- cup brown sugar
- cup ketchup
- cup vinegar
- cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
Directions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C).
Step 2: In a 2-quart casserole dish, add the pork and beans, kidney beans, butter beans, and lima beans.
Step 3: Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add the bacon, chopped onion, and garlic. Cook and stir until the bacon is browned and the onion softens, about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Drain excess grease from the pan. Whisk in the brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, molasses, and dry mustard. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is well-cooked and thickened.
Step 5: Pour the prepared sauce over the beans in the casserole dish and stir to combine.
Step 6: Place the casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the dish is bubbling and the flavors have melded together.

This dish was fantastic! It was a hit at the cookout and everyone preferred it over any store-bought baked beans. I made a slight adjustment by using 1 large can of kidney beans, 2 cans of pinto beans, and 1 can of black beans, but the other ingredients really make it shine. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Absolutely delicious! I prepped it a day in advance and cooked it on high in the slow cooker the next day for a big group. It made dinner effortless and I was asked for the recipe by several guests. Such a fantastic recipe!

I browned all the ingredients and let the sauce with bacon simmer the day before. Mixing it in with the beans the next day was a breeze, and it saved me from having to clean an extra frying pan on the day I needed the dish. I brought it to a potluck and not a single bean was left! Absolutely delicious!

Are butter beans and lima beans interchangeable, just with different names? I left out the pork & beans and swapped in great northern beans seasoned with a touch of paprika and onion powder, included 1/2lb of beef, opted for turbinado sugar over brown sugar, omitted garlic due to not having any on hand, used bbq sauce instead of ketchup, and dijon mustard instead of the dry variety. The result was fantastic! I will certainly be making this dish again.

I might have made a mistake, but the beans turned out quite firm. I used a mix of pinto, white, and navy beans. The taste was fantastic, but next time I'll need to simmer the beans for longer to achieve a level of tenderness closer to canned baked beans. I will definitely give it another try, maybe using a crockpot next time.

I thoroughly enjoyed the flavors of this dish! I will certainly be preparing it again. The only downside was that it ended up a bit dry towards the end of the cooking process. I'm considering adding extra ketchup or perhaps some water next time, or even reducing the cooking time to around 50 or 60 minutes. I'll be experimenting to find the perfect balance, as the flavor profile is truly exceptional!

Excellent recipe! I switched the variety of beans but otherwise followed the instructions exactly. I scaled up the recipe to feed over 125 people.

Placed the meat on the smoker too early to give a full review, but will update later. It smells promising, with a lovely maple aroma from the pellet smoker.
