Candied Yams Recipe
How to Make Candied Yams
This delicious, easy-to-make candied yam recipe is a holiday favorite that requires only four simple ingredients: canned sweet potatoes, butter, brown sugar, and miniature marshmallows. Its a quick and fuss-free side dish, perfect for any festive occasion, and it takes just 40 minutes from start to finish. Whether it's Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter, this is a go-to recipe that everyone will love.
Ingredients
- 1 (29-ounce) can of sweet potatoes, drained
- cup butter, cut into pieces
- cup brown sugar
- 1 cups miniature marshmallows
Directions
Follow these simple steps to make the perfect candied yams:
- Drain the sweet potatoes: Begin by draining the syrup from the can of sweet potatoes. This ensures that your candied yams wont become runny during baking.
- Prepare the baking dish: Place the drained sweet potatoes into a medium baking dish, spreading them out evenly.
- Dice the butter: Cut the cold butter into small pieces and distribute them evenly over the sweet potatoes.
- Add the brown sugar: Measure the brown sugar by packing it firmly into a measuring cup. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the sweet potatoes. Make sure to break up any lumps in the sugar to ensure an even distribution.
- Top with marshmallows: Spread the miniature marshmallows evenly over the top of the sweet potatoes. You can use more or fewer marshmallows depending on your preference for the marshmallow topping.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 400F (200C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the marshmallows are golden and melty.
- Enjoy: Once baked, remove the candied yams from the oven and serve them hot as a sweet, savory side dish.
Tips & Variations
You can customize this recipe to your liking by adding extra spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a dash of vanilla extract. If you prefer fresh sweet potatoes, substitute about three or four medium-sized potatoes for the canned version. Simply peel, cut, and cook them before following the rest of the recipe.

This dish is a great make-ahead option too. You can prepare it a day or two in advance, storing it in the fridge without the marshmallows. When youre ready to bake, just top it with marshmallows and pop it into the oven. Enjoy the sweet, creamy goodness!

My first Thanksgiving in charge and this dish was wonderful! I prepared it ahead of time so I'll give the details in case it helps someone else. Four large fresh yams (microwaved 20 minutes per a previous reviewer) peeled and cubed (they were almost too soft to cube) fit in a 1 1/2 quart casserole. I added the butter, sugar and a cup of marshmallows and left it in the fridge. Nothing I had was cooking at 400, so I tossed it in for 20-30 minutes with some other things at 350, and for another 20-25 at 375. I left it covered that entire time as I wanted it to heat up, but not burn. The marshmallows melted in and it was all golden bubbly goodness. I covered the top with more marshmallows and popped it back in uncovered long enough for the marshmallows to merge and get toasty. (Just about the same time it takes to brown the french onions on the green bean casserole!) They held a soft cube form long enough to pick up with a fork, but dissolved the minute they hit your mouth. Scrumptious! Second time around, I peeled the yams first and cubed them and steamed them until tender. It seemed MUCH easier for me than microwaving first and the final texture came out better. I used too much butter, though, and it was very watery in the bottom. Or there may be something to using a higher heat to carmelize the sugar. Still tasted great!

I give it a 5 STARS but I added more to it the recipe so it's almost a whole different recipe. : / But I love that I found this recipe as a starting off point because I've never liked candied yams but now I do. Made this for 3 years now. HERE IS MY VERSION: I used FRESH yams and microwave or bake them. Per other peoples instructions I added more butter and more brown sugar plus other spices so it looks like this: 1/2 cup butter, 3/4 brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, and 1/4 tsp ginger. I combine everything w/the fresh cooked cut yams and let it sit in fridge for 2 hours or whatever time I have. Then bake it with a handful of marshmallows on top for 25 minutes. Then add more marshmallows allover the top and bake another 5 minutes or so and check often until they are golden brown. IT'S ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. - Thank you for this recipe. Cynthia

Super easy and everyone loved it. If using canned yams, remember to drain yams and then rough mash with the back of a spoon. Use a small casserole dish so the entire bottom is covered with yam. Sprinkle with brown sugar, sprinkle with cinnamon, dot with butter, use enough marshmallows to cover the top. Tent with foil. Baked covered 15-20 minutes then remove foil and continue baking until marshmallow is lightly browned.

This is a good general starting point, as another reviewer pointed out. I always use fresh sweet potatoes and bake them ahead of time for about an hour-ish at 400 depending on size. I use real butter and brown sugar, but I also add a little cinnamon and a bit of cloves. The additional spices make a big difference and add some depth to the flavor. The marshmallows are a must, nice and toasty on top.

This is a great recipe, but I melt the butter in a pan, add the brown sugar and stir until smooth. I also add a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour over sweet potatoes, top with marshmallows then bake. Delicious!

So, I made to small batches from this recipe. I divided the recipe in half. The first I made copied the exact recipe. The second one slight mashed the canned yams and added some salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. I baked it at 400F for 10 min bc the top of the marshmallow was already almost burnt. Verdict: I preferred the second version. The exact recipe was a bit bland. The marshmallow on both were rock hard, did not have that gooey affect. So maybe next time I'll bake at 350F for 15 min? I'm not sure. I'm glad I tested this recipe BEFORE Thanksgiving. The yams were drained but still had a lot of liquid.

I made this early in the day to take to family dinner. I used 7med. sized fresh yams, peeled, cubed & boiled them. After cooling down I shredded the butter over them, very lightly dusted with cinnamon (prob less than 1/8tsp), salted them and sprinkled brown sugar. Later that day warmed it in the oven then added the marshmellows & baked at 375 til golden. DELISH!

This recipe was so good and easy. The brown sugar didn’t go all through the sweet potatoes, so the next time, I mixed the brown sugar in the yams and added cinnamon and mixed it up and then covered it with marshmallows like the recipe and it was marvelous.

These were excellent! I did add cinnamon to the top of the yams. I also added the min marshmallows 10 mins before done. ( Drain the yams.)

Very good. I used fresh sweet potatoes (cooking before) and followed the recipe. I did add just a little bit of cinnamon and ignored the marshmallow amount. I ended up using about a 1/2 bag. It was amazing. I cooked with foil until there were only 10 mins left - then I uncovered to really toast the marshmallows. My family loved! Next time I will decrease the amount of butter. It was a bit too watery at the bottom of the dish for my liking.

Great tasting and simple. The only thing is that the 29 ounce can is too small for 6 people. I used a 40 oz can of sweet potatoes for 5 people and really could've added more. A 40 oz can filled a 9"x9" pan (523 cm2) and was just under 1" deep.

add pumpkin spice/cinnamon/nutmeg or really any spice along this thought line, use more sugar and butter, DEFINITELY use more marshmallows than the picture shows if you're thinking "thats a lot of grease and sugar" thats how country cookin works darlin and bless yr sweet heart if you think mussin with the recipie gonna make it taste any better. if you want it more yammy then use a deeper dish with less marshmallow, if you want it more like a dessert casserole then make it in a shallower dish and make that sunuvagun a full half marshmallow this is a great base but you forreal wanna wing it from here. this is cooking in the oven, not baking

I love candied yams. I was looking for a easy to make recipe requiring only a few ingredients. This was perfect. I happened to have some nutmeg(1/8 tsp) and cinnamon(1/4 tsp) also salt(1/8 tsp)that I decided to add. Turned out really good! I have also tried the recipe with original ingredients. It too is amazing
