One-Pot Spaghetti with Meat Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe was developed with its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 small white onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (26 ounce) jar tomato-basil pasta sauce
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 (8 ounce) package spaghetti noodles, broken in half
- cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese for serving (Optional)
Directions
Step 1: In a large pot or skillet with tall sides, combine the ground Italian sausage, diced onions, and minced garlic. Cook over medium heat for about 5 to 8 minutes, or until the sausage is fully cooked.
Step 2: Drain any excess grease and discard it.
Step 3: Stir in the tomato-basil pasta sauce, water, and Italian seasoning. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Step 4: Once the mixture reaches a boil, add the broken spaghetti noodles. Stir to ensure the noodles are evenly distributed in the sauce.
Step 5: Return to a boil, then reduce heat slightly and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 17 to 20 minutes, or until the noodles are fully cooked and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
Step 6: Serve hot, topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
Recipe Tip
You can use either mild or hot ground Italian sausage depending on your preferred level of spiciness.

Just what I was looking for: a one pot recipe for a family dinner favorite. I doubled the recipe and it turned out great. Used chicken stock in place of the water as suggested by another reviewer.

Easy to make. I've used this recipe several times opting between beef and sausage. I use chicken broth instead of water for additional flavoring. I also added mushrooms. Yum.

Definitely a keeper! It is nice to only have to clean one pot. I love the versatility of the recipe. I added mushrooms and used bow tie pasta because that’s what I had in the pantry. I also used a jar of arrabbiata sauce instead of tomato basil. The family loved this pasta and wanted me to keep the recipe

This was quick and easy to prepare. I used ground beef and penne pasta and added chopped green peppers, a can of diced tomatoes, and some tomato paste. Also, I used two jars of pasta sauce and a full box of pasta (16 oz.), basically doubling the recipe, so I measured the liquid from the tomatoes and then added water and chicken bouillon to equal three cups instead of two. The sauce seemed thin enough to cook the pasta so I didn't add a fourth cup of water. The penne was ready in about ten minutes, much sooner than I expected based on the recipe. We thoroughly enjoyed it and have enough for another meal.

Made a type of goulash with this recipe and it turned out great. I added about another half a cup of water. So much better not having to cook the noodles in a separate pot.

Recipe was excellent. The flavors were on point. Adding additional ingredients made it better. Extra sauteed garlic, some mushrooms, diced poblano peppers. I also used the hot variety of pork sausage and elbow pasta. This is the only way to make this dish, for me anyway. can't beat one-pot meals! Next time I plan on trying this in my Instant pot.

Turned out delicious! I had 1.5 lbs of beef to use, added 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning, and some salt and pepper. Cooked the garlic, then onion, then ground beef. Ended up not needing to cook as long with the pasta at the end, maybe only 12 mins or so. Sauce does cook down a lot so if you want it more saucy, add more to start. Will definitely make again!

I've made this dish a few times, but since I don't eat meat I substituted the sausage for some Beyond Burger patties chopping them up to be more like ground beef.

I’ve made this for years from a recipe named Cuban spaghetti maybe? Slight changes, I substitute the water with chicken broth, make it with ground beef and add a larger can of sliced black olives towards the end. I had been thinking of trying sausage, next time I will!

I used beef instead of sausage. I scaled it down to 2 servings and used thin spaghetti. Still required more water. About a cup more. Took the same amount of time but it was tasty. My daughter loved it!

My Girl Scouts when they were Brownies had to make a 1 pot meal. We made this while camping and one of the girls ate 7 plates full. We use ground beef instead of sausage and use Ragu chunky style with garlic and onion. Easier to make. They are now in 8th grade and this is still their go to meal when we camp.

Yes, if you simply cannot bear to boil water, it does work. However, the result is a pasty, starchy dinner lacking flavor. Pasty is not a desirable flavor profile.
