Ingredients

  • 2 1 1/2-inch-thick New York strip steaks, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • cup canned sliced bamboo shoots, drained
  • cup canned sliced mushrooms, drained (optional)
  • cup chopped green onion
  • green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • cup sugar snap peas (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • (10 fluid ounce) bottle oyster sauce

Directions

  1. Place steak in a bowl and top with minced onion, garlic, and 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Stir to coat the meat evenly.
  2. In a saucepan, bring the rice and 4 cups water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, about 20 to 25 minutes.
  3. While the rice cooks, heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add bamboo shoots, mushrooms, cup green onion, green bell pepper, red pepper flakes, and 3 tablespoons soy sauce. Stir-fry for 4 to 5 minutes, until the bell pepper is slightly tender.
  4. Add the steak pieces, broccoli, and sugar snap peas (if using) to the skillet. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and no longer pink in the center, about 10 minutes.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water until smooth and the cornstarch has dissolved.
  6. Heat the oyster sauce in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Gradually add the cornstarch mixture while stirring, and cook until the sauce thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Pour the oyster sauce mixture into the skillet with the steak and vegetables. Stir well and cook for an additional 7 to 8 minutes until the sauce is thickened and everything is coated.
  8. Top with the remaining cup of green onions. Serve the beef stir-fry over the cooked rice.

I included fresh onion, garlic, mushrooms, and added some fresh ginger in my recipe. Unfortunately, the meat didn't turn out as flavorful as I had expected. For my next attempt, I plan to marinate it in oyster sauce overnight to enhance the taste.

I tried the boneless rib strips dish without mushrooms and red pepper. It was fantastic! I also sprinkled some sesame seeds for an extra touch.

Great recipe! I substituted pork for beef and made a delicious sauce with fish and hoisin sauce instead of oyster sauce. My husband loved it, and we enjoyed it with rice and egg rolls. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
