Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
Original recipe (1X) yields 4 servings
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- teaspoon ground turmeric
- teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- teaspoon mustard powder
- 3 ounces salted pretzels, crushed
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 pounds chicken tenderloins
- Olive oil cooking spray
Directions
Step 1: Preheat an air fryer to 400F (200C), if recommended by the manufacturer.
Step 2: In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, turmeric, black pepper, and mustard powder. Seal the bag and shake it well until the dry ingredients are fully mixed.
Step 3: Spread the crushed pretzels on a plate, and line another plate with parchment paper.
Step 4: Pat the chicken tenders dry with paper towels and add them to the bag with the seasoned flour. Seal the bag again and toss the tenders until they are lightly coated.
Step 5: Using your non-dominant hand, dip each tender into the beaten egg, shaking off any excess. Then, place it onto the crushed pretzels, using your dry hand to press the pretzels onto the chicken. Lightly press the pretzels into each tender to ensure a good coating.
Step 6: Place each pretzel-coated tender onto the parchment-lined plate. Lightly spray both sides of the tenders with olive oil cooking spray.
Step 7: Carefully add the chicken tenders to the preheated air fryer in a single layer.
Step 8: Air fry the chicken for 5 to 6 minutes. Using tongs, carefully turn the tenders and air fry them for an additional 5 to 6 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear. An instant-read thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165F (74C).
Step 9: Serve the chicken tenders immediately, and enjoy your crispy, pretzel-coated meal!
Cook's Notes
- Crush the pretzels inside a heavy-duty plastic bag using a rolling pin or a heavy pan. Some texture is desirable for a crispy coating.
- This recipe was developed for a 5.3-quart basket-style air fryer. Different air fryer sizes and styles may require adjustments to the cooking time.

Origin and History
The origins of pretzel-crusted dishes can be traced back to German cuisine, where pretzels have been a beloved snack for centuries. Pretzels were originally developed by European monks in the early Middle Ages as a simple dough twisted into a knot shape. Their unique combination of crispy, salty crust and soft, chewy center made them a favorite among locals. Over time, pretzels migrated across Europe and eventually to America, where they gained popularity as a snack food. The idea of using pretzels as a crust for various dishes, including chicken tenders, emerged as part of the global trend of creatively incorporating familiar snacks into new culinary forms.
Regional Features
In the United States, the concept of pretzel-crusted chicken tenders is a more modern American invention that blends traditional comfort food with a trendy twist. The crunchy and salty pretzel coating pairs perfectly with the tender chicken, making it a popular option in American homes, particularly for family dinners, snacks, or appetizers. Many variations of this recipe can be found across the country, with some regions opting for specific types of mustard powder or seasoning to complement the flavor.
How It Differs from Similar Dishes
While many dishes use breadcrumbs or flour to coat chicken, the pretzel crust stands out for its distinct texture and salty flavor. Unlike regular breadcrumb crusts, pretzel crumbs provide a much crunchier, more substantial texture. Additionally, the savory saltiness of the pretzel coating offers a more complex flavor profile compared to other breaded or battered options. This makes pretzel-crusted chicken tenders a standout choice for those seeking something beyond the usual crispy chicken tenders.
Where It Is Typically Served
Air Fryer Pretzel-Crusted Chicken Tenders are versatile and can be served in a variety of settings. They are commonly enjoyed as a snack or appetizer at parties, casual gatherings, or game days. Because of their easy-to-make nature and crowd-pleasing taste, they are often featured at family dinners, especially when served with a dipping sauce such as honey mustard or ranch dressing. They can also be a main course when paired with sides like roasted vegetables, salads, or mashed potatoes, making them a perfect choice for both adults and children alike.
