Pork Chop and Potato Casserole Recipe

Pork Chop and Potato Casserole

Recipe Overview: This comforting dish combines tender pork chops, creamy mushroom soup, crispy potatoes, and melted cheese for a hearty and satisfying meal. Its an easy-to-make casserole thats perfect for family dinners or gatherings.

History and Origin

The origins of the pork chop and potato casserole can be traced back to American home cooking traditions, where casseroles became a popular method for creating filling and affordable meals. While its exact origin is unclear, casseroles like this one were particularly popular in the mid-20th century, during a time when convenience and budget-friendly cooking methods became a household staple. With the use of canned soups and pre-prepared ingredients, the casserole evolved into a quick, comforting dinner for families across the United States.

Regional Variations

In the United States, the pork chop and potato casserole has been adapted in various regional styles. In the Midwest, for example, the dish may incorporate local root vegetables, such as parsnips or rutabaga, in place of potatoes, while in the South, the casserole might include a blend of spicy seasonings or a dash of hot sauce to add a kick. The inclusion of different types of cheeses, from sharp cheddar to a blend of Monterey Jack and mozzarella, is also a common regional adaptation.

Distinctions from Similar Dishes

While pork chop casseroles are common in American cuisine, this dish stands out due to the use of a creamy soup base, typically cream of mushroom soup, which gives it a rich, velvety texture. Unlike traditional baked pork chops that are simply seasoned and roasted, the pork chops in this casserole are seared before baking, ensuring a more tender and flavorful result. Additionally, the casserole uses sliced potatoes that are baked alongside the pork chops, infusing the dish with the savory flavors of both the meat and the sauce, unlike other dishes where potatoes may be cooked separately.

Where It Is Commonly Served

Pork chop and potato casserole is a beloved family meal and is commonly served in homes across the United States. It is often seen as a comforting dish during colder months, making it a popular choice for fall and winter dinners. This casserole is also a great option for potlucks and casual gatherings, as it is easy to prepare in advance and serves a crowd. Due to its hearty ingredients, it pairs well with a simple side salad or steamed vegetables, offering a balanced and filling meal.

Interesting Facts

  • The use of condensed cream soups in casseroles like this one became popular in the 1950s when the Campbell Soup Company heavily marketed its convenience products to homemakers.
  • Potatoes, a staple ingredient in this casserole, are one of the most versatile vegetables in American cuisine. In fact, there are over 400 types of potatoes grown in the United States.
  • This dish can be easily adapted to suit different dietary preferences. For example, by swapping out the pork chops for chicken or using a plant-based soup, the casserole can be made vegetarian-friendly.

FAQ about Pork Chop and Potato Casserole Recipe

Yes, you can assemble the casserole a few hours in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator. Bake it just before serving. If storing overnight, cover tightly with foil and bake a few extra minutes to ensure it's heated through.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through or in the microwave in shorter intervals to avoid drying out the pork.

Yes, you can freeze the casserole either before or after baking. If freezing before baking, assemble and cover tightly with foil, then freeze for up to 2 months. Bake from frozen, adding about 20–30 minutes to the cooking time. If freezing after baking, allow it to cool completely before wrapping tightly.

You can use any firm potato like Yukon Gold or red potatoes. Thin slices cook evenly and help the casserole finish baking in the specified time. Avoid starchy potatoes like Russets unless thinly sliced.

Yes, but bone-in chops may require a slightly longer baking time. To prevent overcooking, sear the chops first and check for doneness before adding cheese for the final bake.

The basic recipe is mild. You can add garlic, paprika, cayenne, seasoned salt, or fresh herbs to enhance flavor. Searing the pork chops with spices also boosts taste.

Thinly sliced raw potatoes cook through in the casserole as directed. For thicker slices or faster cooking, you can parboil or microwave them briefly before layering.

Yes, you can use cream of chicken or a combination of soups. Adjust milk slightly if using a thinner soup to maintain the creamy consistency.

Sear the chops first to lock in juices and consider placing them at the bottom of the dish under the potato layer. Covering the casserole for the first half of baking also helps retain moisture.

Yes, ingredient amounts can be adjusted proportionally. Keep in mind that baking time may change slightly depending on the depth of the casserole.

I used other suggestions and increased the cheese and potatoes; I decreased the milk and added garlic and French-fried onions (see my other reviews for more doubled recipes.) I used 6 medium sized potatoes sliced in the food processor. After sautéing pork chops in olive oil, I sprinkled with a season salt. It doesn't matter if it’s a season salt or some sort of rub, just put a spice on it. Then I took it out of my pan and added the onions with 2 cloves of garlic, sprinkled with paprika and pepper and sautéed. I bet you could increase the onion a bit. I didn't because of the kids. Don't add salt. I did one time and it was too salty. At this point I added the soup and 1/2 of cup of milk only. Even with six medium sized potatoes, this was enough fluid. Mix this up, add the potatoes and pour over pork chops that are in my 13 x 9 rectangle stone; cover with foil the first 30 min. and then remove foil, top with 2 cups cheese and sprinkle with French-fried onions and bake 30 more minutes. I think the key to this recipe is thin chops, covering the dish. Also, instead of the spices you could probably just ad a can of golden mushroom soup.

This basic recipe is a good starting point. I gave it 3 stars because alot of adjustments needed to be made to give it flavor and fine tune it. Like many others I added some actual seasonings to this. Mainly adding Mccormick Seasoned Pepper (has bell peppers in it, and a more rounded flavor) a pich of salt, and a bit of paprika. I lightly saute'd my onions in about a tablespoon of butter and added some minced garlic to open the aromatics and allow better flavor, then I simply seared my boneless pork chops in the same pan- seals in moisture, and they are well cooked after an hour in the oven at 400° I decreased my milk by half and doubled the amount of condensed soup and the potatoes. I sliced up baby red potatoes with the skin on. I changed the cheddar cheese to a 4 cheese Mexican blend - melts better and less oils. Baked as directed. So while this dish is a family favorite now, it needed the extra thought and adjustments, otherwise a solid 4- 4.5 star dish. I'm tempted to play with it more and use some Recado spice in it .

The recipe is wonderful as a base but wanted more flavor, and to use some extra stuff we had in the refrigerator. No spices were mentioned at all in this recipe so that's we gave it only 3 stars. We had a sweet potato, parsley and some garlic left over from a previous meal so we added those to the mix. And we like our food with a little heat so... WOW!!! We also didn't use as much milk and we cooked 30 minutes covered and then added the cheese while the dish was cooking uncovered for the remaining 30 minutes. Oh, and we put the center cut pork chops on the bottom of the pan while cooking. I think that kept them super moist while cooking. Hope this enhances someones dinner meal. We use what we have to make each meal an experience!!!

I took tips from the comments and put the chops on the bottom and then layered potatoes and added broccoli and some garlic and worcestershire. I also added cheese in bowl while mixing sauce. Can never have too much cheese! Cooked it 1/2 hr with foil on and 1/2 with foil off. Delicious.

I made this today. I used 6 bone in pork chops. Cooking the chops 1hr at 400* was way too long and they were overcooked and dry. Next time I would brush some of the cream of mushroom/milk sauce on the chops and then add the chops the last half hour when you add the shredded cheese. I would put some of the shredded cheese on top of potatoes then put pork chops on top of potato mixture, then more shredded cheese on top of chops. I did try someone's comments about frying the sliced onions with garlic which added a nice taste to casserole. I also pre-seasoned pork and potatoes. Casserole tasted good, just chops too done... Definitely needed applesauce on the side.

This recipe was simple and easy to make. I read the other reviews and I agree to cut the milk to 1/2 cup. I browned the chops and also baked everything in a large cast iron skillet which worked perfect. The only addition I made was adding some cayenne to the pork chops prior to baking. Very hearty. filling meal that is great for wintertime dinner. Thanks for the recipe!

The dish is a simple one without much seasoning. I did modify it to use some eggplant that need to be eaten. Cut the pork chops into small cubes and used a seasoned flour. Browned the meat , using sliced thin fingerling potatoes and small cubed eggplant and onions diced. Used the cream of mushroom soup with a 1/2 of cup of water and poured it over the mixture and spread it out (it is thick because your eggplant will provide the liquid needed) cook as directed. Turned out great, but next time I would season the veggies tp add a nicer flavor to the dish.

After reading so many comments I made small changes. Seared the chops with the onions. We like a little heat so I used a little Cajun Seasoning, Black Pepper, and Cayenne Pepper on the chops. Added minced garlic on top of the potatoes then the chops. Everything else the same from there. I will share that I only had 3 fresh potatoes so I used a can of Del Monte Fresh Cut Sliced New Potatoes and could not tell the difference. Came out delicious!

I added my spice to chops and seared, I also fried onions and garlic. This gives it in my mind a better flavour. I also used cream of mushroom with shiitake mushrooms for unique flavour

I made it with both cream of chicken and cream of mushroom. I also layered cheese on top of potatoes and onions then on top of pork chops before adding soup mix. I also added sour cream to the soup mix. After 30 minutes I added another layer of cheese. All cheese layers were lightly layered. It is wonderful. Thank you for the recipe 🤨

I don’t like Lipton Onion Soup. I cut up a medium onion and spread it around. Added 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper.

I made this recipe as instructed and read through th reviews with that said this was ok. The potatoes were still pretty raw after the 30 min so I had to take the pork chops out and cover the potatoes and cook them an additional 30 min. I would make it again as the flavors were good just would cover it next time.

Quick and easy! Added the usual party favors (onion and garlic powder, and salt and pepper, and really seasoned my potatoes before layering in pan) and also added a layer of mushrooms on top of the potatoes, then topped with about half of the cheese, and then the chops (I used bone-in and just seared a little longer). The whole family LOVED this dish! 🤗
