Incredibly Cheesy Turkey Meatloaf

Origin Story

The concept of meatloaf, though hard to pin down to a specific date, has long been a staple in American kitchens. Its origins trace back to Europe, where similar dishes made from ground meats date back centuries. However, it was the United States that turned it into the classic comfort food we know today, often utilizing cheap and readily available meats such as beef, pork, or turkey. This recipe, "Incredibly Cheesy Turkey Meatloaf," is a modern twist on the traditional dish, using lean ground turkey and an extra dose of cheese for a moist and flavorful version. It has become a family favorite, particularly among those looking for a healthier alternative to traditional beef meatloaf while still maintaining great flavor and texture.

Regional Variations

Meatloaf recipes can vary greatly across the United States and beyond. In the Southern United States, for example, it's common to add barbecue sauce or even cooked vegetables like bell peppers and onions for extra flavor. In contrast, the Midwest often prefers a simpler approach with a basic meatloaf topped with ketchup or tomato sauce. The "cheesy" version of this dish may remind some of the popular American obsession with cheese and its ability to make almost any dish better. Whether its sharp cheddar, mild mozzarella, or gooey Colby, the cheese melds perfectly into the turkey meat, creating a dish that appeals to both kids and adults alike.

What Makes It Unique?

Unlike traditional meatloaf recipes that rely heavily on beef, this variation uses lean turkey, making it a healthier option without sacrificing flavor. What truly sets this meatloaf apart, though, is the generous amount of cheese folded into the meat mixture. The Colby cheese, when baked, melts beautifully, infusing the meatloaf with a rich, savory flavor. Additionally, the inclusion of milk-soaked breadcrumbs ensures the meatloaf remains moist, even with the lean turkey. Unlike other cheesy meatloafs, this recipe uses cubed cheese rather than shredded, which results in pockets of gooey cheese in each slice, offering a delightful contrast to the savory turkey.

Where Is It Usually Served?

This incredibly cheesy turkey meatloaf is often served in casual family settings, making it an ideal weeknight dinner. It's typically accompanied by mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad. Given its comforting nature and ease of preparation, it is also a popular choice for gatherings and potlucks. In fact, its hearty and filling nature makes it a perfect dish to prepare in bulk for feeding a crowd. Some people even enjoy it as leftovers the next day, making it an excellent meal prep option.

Fun Facts

  • Turkey meatloaf became popular as a healthier alternative to the traditional beef-based recipe in the 1980s and 1990s as people became more health-conscious.
  • Cheese is often added to meatloaf for flavor, and varieties like mozzarella, cheddar, and Colby are particularly popular because they melt well and add a creamy texture.
  • The term "meatloaf" itself was first used in the early 19th century, and it became widely popular in the U.S. during the Great Depression due to its ability to stretch inexpensive ingredients into a filling meal.
  • Some versions of meatloaf, including this one, are made with ingredients that are versatile, allowing cooks to add their own spin, such as adding vegetables like carrots and onions or swapping ketchup for BBQ sauce.

FAQ about Incredibly Cheesy Turkey Meatloaf Recipe

Leftover meatloaf should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can be kept for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, you can use the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes or microwave it for a quicker option.

Yes, you can freeze this meatloaf. Let it cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil before placing it in a freezer bag. It will stay good for up to 3 months. When ready to eat, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven.

Since turkey is lean, it shouldn't be greasy by itself. However, to avoid excess fat, make sure to drain any liquid that may accumulate during baking. Using lean ground turkey or placing the meatloaf on a rack while baking can also help to reduce grease buildup.

Absolutely! While Colby cheese is recommended for its meltability and flavor, you can substitute it with other cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend of cheeses for a different taste. Just be sure to use a cheese that melts well for the best results.

Yes! Many people love to add finely grated carrots, onions, or even zucchini to the meat mixture. Just be mindful not to add too much moisture, which can affect the texture. Be sure to squeeze out excess water from vegetables like zucchini before adding them to the mix.

If you don't have ketchup, you can use BBQ sauce, tomato sauce, or even a combination of both for the topping. Some people also enjoy adding Worcestershire sauce or mustard for a different flavor profile.

If your meatloaf falls apart, it could be due to too much moisture in the mixture or not enough binding ingredients. Try using less milk or adding a bit more bread crumbs. Additionally, be sure to let the meatloaf rest for a few minutes after baking to help it set before slicing.

The internal temperature of the meatloaf should reach 180°F (85°C) for it to be fully cooked and safe to eat. You can use a meat thermometer to check the temperature to avoid undercooking or overcooking.

To add some spice to your meatloaf, you can incorporate ingredients like cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or hot sauce into the mix. Spicy cheese varieties like pepper jack or adding jalapeños can also increase the heat level.

This was VERY good! I made some changes, here is exactly what I did: I grated 4 baby carrots and about half of a yellow onion into the bowl using a large microplane. I soaked the 1 cup of breadcrumbs in the 1 cup of milk while I was grating the veggies. This last step plumps up the bread so that it's nice and moist all through the mixture, and then I just add this mushy mixture to the meatloaf. Also, I grated the colby cheese fresh instead of using pre-grated since I find it melts better this way. As the recipe stated, after using my hands to mix the meatloaf, I FOLDED the cheese in using a spoonula as if making a mousse. I added a few splashes of worcestershire sauce to the mix, and then I formed TWO loaves in a 9x13 baking dish. Covered each loaf with a thin layer of my favorite bottled BBQ sauce, and used a thermometer to alert me when they had reached 175 degrees, took them out of the oven and covered with foil for a couple of minutes. Delicious! I love this served with oven-roasted potatoes or mashed potatoes, and 'Jamie's Cranberry Spinach Salad' from this website. ***UPDATE: according to the USDA website (and other websites as well), ground turkey must be cooked to 165 degrees. So, I remove this meatloaf from the oven when it registers between 155 and 160, and then cover tightly with foil so it comes up to temp. ALWAYS moist, never dry.

This is delicious!!! Yum yum. I added the carrots and onions and used spicy Panko bread crumbs and a variety of cheeses (Gouda, cheddar, pepper jack) freshly shredded. I placed them on wire racks as soon as they hit the right temp to cool quickly and keep the moisture.

This was delicious. I didn't bother checking my ingredients first, so I didn't have exact cheese on hand. I used 10 oz of colby jack slices that I broke into quarters. To make life simpler, I mixed everything in my Kitchen Aid starting with the milk and bread crumbs. I read the reviews and decided to add half an onion and a shredded carrot. I added that in with the rest of the ingredients and a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce. Then I threw in the quartered slices of cheese at the end and let the mixer break it up further. This worked out great! Gooey cheese, without being gobs. I formed this into one big loaf on a sheet pan and baked for an hour. It was very tender, even though I cooked it past 180 degrees internal while I finished side dishes.

I love this recipe. I am always looking for something to do with ground turkey that is not dry. I also love meatloaf but am always looking to avoid red meat as much as possible. This recipe is perfect. I made it to the recipe and it was great, but then I made it again with the following changes, and it was even better. First, I used panko breadcrumbs into which I sprinkled a little parmesan and then soaked with 3/4 cup milk. Instead of ketchup, I used Sweet baby ray's BBQ sauce. I folded 1/4 cup into the meat and then glazed the top. I grated some carrots into the turkey. Since I like the carmelized crust of the meatloaf, I shape the mixture into two loafs to create more crust (for me!) and then watch the baking time closely. It usually doesn't take the full hour. I don't order meatloaf out any more. When I get a craving, I make this. Best of all, my picky family will eat it too . One last tip: I quarter my Colby cheese cubes because if they are too big, I find too much of the cheese runs out of the loaf during baking.

I made lots of changes based on other reviewers’ comments on blandness. Especially recommend adding garlic powder, parsley and Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture, and maybe finely diced onions. But not so much on the grated zucchini or other fresh vegetables. I tried it, and ended up with a little liquid pooling at the bottom. Also completely agree with the chunk vs. grated cheese. Wasn’t sure how I’d like the pools of cheesiness (never thought I’d type that sentence!), but it’s probably better than homogeneity. But you’ve definitely got to do the topping, with some mix of Wor…, ketchup and BBQ sauce. Final comment: No way that all fits in a standard loaf pan! The 1.5 liter VisionWare pot I used was the perfect size, though I was still grateful for the drip pan when the smoke alarm went off!

Added garlic powder and onion powder. I used shredded cheese instead of cubed because it's easier. I brushed with Sweet Baby Rays instead of ketchup. Used a remote probe and cooked until 170 degrees. It got rave reviews and I really enjoyed it and here is the kicker...I HATE GROUND TURKEY. It is literally ground beef's dumb cousin. I'd make it again.

Well, I love this recipe because I used to make meat loaf with ground turkey meat and it was always way too dry. So I figured with meat loaf I always had to use beef but then its high in fat. This recipe has made my turkey meat loaf nice and moist! Its the milk and cheese that does. I had to make a couple changes. I only had 1 pound of ground turkey meat so cut the recipe in half. Next time I will do two. Can't eat bread so used oats and Italian seasoning. Took the advice of others and splashed some Worcestershire Sauce in there. I chopped up some white onion (always have to have that in my meat loaf!) and used up some extra shredded cheese (Mexican blend). I am not a fan of Ketchup so cooked the loaf for 30 minutes then spread tomato sauce on top and cooked it for another 30 minutes. It was a hit! Delicious! Thank you so much for this recipe!!

This is my 7 year old's favorite meal! He takes leftovers for lunch at school the entire week after I've made it for dinner. Only change I make is to add 1 tsp garlic powder and 1 small chopped onion. I omit the ketchup and broil the top once it is finished cooking. Absolute perfection!

really good. i used only 1.3 lbs of turkey so i halved the other ingredients. mixed bread crumbs with the milk. i added about half a cup of shredded carrots chopped finely, some worsteshire sauce, trader joes 21 salute seasoning, kosher salt, pepper, egg and about 6 oz cheddar cheese grated. put in blue glass loaf pan with bbq sauce on top. doesn't taste like your regular meatloaf, more like a turkey cheeseburger. yum. doesn't need to cook that long since I halved it.

This is absolutely delicious. I’ve made this many times now and have changed a few things for my preference. The original is great too though. My changes are to season the turkey with a packet of Italian dressing seasoning instead of the salt and pepper. Cut the cheese in half and use freshly shredded cheese. And instead of ketchup use hickory bbq sauce mixed (1/3 cup) in the meat and a lot on top. This takes it to a whole new level.

Really good base, then made it my own. I shredded the cheese like recommended in the comments. Then I add poultry and Italian seasonings. I also mince garlic, onion and bell pepper. A dash of cayenne, and Worcestershire sauce. Pretty much it. Happy cooking all.

This was delicious! I followed the advice of one of the reviewers to let the breadcrumbs soak in the milk while I prepped the other ingredients, then mixed it with the meat. It turned out really well.

I didn’t have any ketchup so I used marinara sauce and it was fine. I didn’t miss the sweetness of the ketchup. This is one of my go to recipes.

I made this with a pack of Lipton onion soup mix, good flavor. I made it in a loaf pan, not again because it burns the top. Next time in a 8x8

My family is obsessed with this version of meatloaf. I even like it, and I am not a meatloaf fan. Lol. Definitely would recommend.

I love how easy this recipe is! I always swap barbecue sauce instead of ketchup, mixing 1/3 cup in with Turkey and spreading more on top. I cut up a small onion and throw that in. Add either garlic powder/garlic salt instead of just salt. I add whatever cheese I have on hand, which is usually a shredded cheese and it works fine.

Also added the carrots, onions and shredded the cheese makes it even better.
