Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cups white sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cups boiling water

Directions

Step 1: Gather all the ingredients. Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Place the butter into an 8-inch square baking dish and set it in the oven to melt while it preheats.

Step 2: Sift the self-rising flour, cup of sugar, and 1 tablespoons of cocoa powder together into a medium-sized bowl. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until the mixture becomes smooth.

Step 3: In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup of sugar with cup of cocoa powder.

Step 4: Once the butter is melted, remove the baking dish from the oven. Pour the flour-sugar mixture over the melted butter, then evenly sprinkle the sugar-cocoa mixture on top.

Step 5: Slowly pour the boiling water over the entire mixture in the baking dish. Do not stir the water in; it will form a sauce as it bakes.

Step 6: Place the baking dish back in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until the cake has set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake will have a rich, gooey chocolate center.

Cooks Note

If you would like to double this recipe, you can bake it in a 9x13-inch baking dish for larger portions.

I didn't have self-rising flour, so I substituted with 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 1.5 teaspoons of baking powder. I didn't change anything else, and this dessert turned out very well. It is not too sweet or too decadent, but it satisfies a chocolate craving. I let it cool until it was just warm and the sauce was thickening, and then served it in bowls with scoops of vanilla ice cream. I will definitely make this again.

This Chocolate Cobbler is so easy and very yummy. The chocolate sauce turned out perfectly for me and for my son (who I mailed the dry ingredients to, pre-mixed in 2 ziplock baggies for each step, at Easter, during our COVID-19 sheltering in place) I added about 1/2 c Black Coffee as 'part of my boiling water'. It was great!! Still, One and a half cups total. I read that more than 1 person only used a half a stick = 4Tblspns of (real) butter and did that just fine, in an 8"x 8" glass pan/dish. If you are serving more than 4 people, double this recipe. See pic. The bowls seen there are fairly small.

Delish! Doubled the recipe but only used 8 Tbsp total of butter, subtracted 1/4 cup sugar with each sugar addition in recipe, only added 2.5 cups boiling water, and cooked for 40 minutes. May try reducing sugar just a tad more as well as the water. Everyone loved it!!

I’ve made it multiple times. I do bring 3/4 cup whole milk and 3/4 cup half & half to steaming and pour that over instead of boiling water. It makes that sauce soooo much richer!

I saw this same recipe on YouTube but when mixing the milk and vanilla into the dry ingredients it was stiff, like cookie dough, and not pourable like in the video. I doubled the milk and it worked perfectly. This recipe is exactly the same so I was prepared. In addition, I added a can of cherry pie filling. OMG!

I needed a quick and easy 3 am chocolate fix so I made this chocolate cobbler. The batter had a very thick brownie like consistency so I had to add enough extra milk to make it a pourable batter. I substituted a 1/4 c. of Kahlúa and added it to the remaining 1 1/4 c. of boiling water. Also, I didn’t stop with 6 T. of butter. I added the whole stick. Yes, I did! I will be making this again. It turned out so rich and chocolatey.

Oh my. Delish! I doubled the recipe using 9x13. Used only 8 tbsps butter, heaping tbsps of cocoa, 2 1/2 cups boiling h2o, decreased white sugar in base by 1/2 cup & added 1/2 cup brown sugar, decreased sugar in topping BY about 1/4-1/2 cup & baked exactly 25 minutes.

I followed the recipe exactly. It turned out so freaking good. My advice is to use real unsalted butter. That low calorie, low fat, or vegetable oil spread (tub butter) will make it too greasy and probably more runny than it is supposed to be. Baked it for the same time as the recipe, and let it set for about 20-40 mins. This makes the “filling” the perfect consistency! If you dig into it too early, it won’t be right. It will still be warm and delicious after the wait, don’t worry! Patience is key ;)

I make this all the time! I follow other reviewers suggestions to increase the cocoa to heaping measurements, and add a little espresso powder to the sugar and cocoa mixture. A family favorite.

Delicious & easy, though a bit too sweet for me. I cut the sugar 1½ cups (which was still too sweet), added approx 45ml of strong brewed coffee, & a ¼tsp of cinnamon to really bring out the chocolate flavour & yum! Though the original recipe is for sure worth making too :)

My boyfriend got it into his head that plums chocolate taste good together, so asked me to make dessert with those two in it. When i found this cobbler recipe i thought it was perfect. Simple ingredients and easy steps. His sister and i loved it! The only thing changed was adding some plum slices tossed in brown sugar before topping with the cocoa as sugar mix. And i didn't measure boiling water out just ladled it on until my pan couldn't hold anymore, which was couple ladle fulls. The flavors were rich and chocolatey paired with tartness of the plums. It came out great paired with some vanilla ice cream! My only change would be that won't so much water next time i think the fruit released lot of own liquid when baking and, in turn, made it a bit too runny. But i highly recommend this recipe and I will definitely be adding this recipe my dessert staples!

Delicious. A big hit! Great gooey sweet chocolate flavor in both the crust and the fudgy part of this recipe. Doubled recipe (all ingredients) for 9x13 pan, and I added approximately 15 minutes of baking time for boiling water to cook off/evaporate - especially in center. Because I often serve this at potlucks where it is inconvenient to take and travel with ice cream, I keep it warm in an insulated carrier and take Cool Whip to top it.

I read the comment about the measurements not being right when you double it so I was aware of that when I doubled the recipe. I followed the directions exactly and after 30 minutes it was like brown water on the top just like when I poured the boiling water in. Very disappointing. :(

Not a bad recipe, but not super well-written either. First off, can we please not use self rising flour and instead just include the ingredients you need for a rise? People more commonly have baking powder on hand than self-rising flour. It would make it way easier to just include those measurements. Second, I HATE that some ingredients are measured out in the ingredients list and some are measured out in the steps. On websites with ads, it’s a hassle to navigate back and forth. Otherwise, this is a simple and easy recipe. Probably not the best flavor I’ve had, but still good. I’d use a different recipe in the future though.

It was tricky navigating the amounts for more than one portion.

This probably would have been good. However, I used your recipe for doubling the ingredients (2X), and your Step 2 and Step 3 instructions are wrong in both the 2X & 4X instructions. In Step 2 and Step 3, you're listing ingredient amounts from the original 8-serving recipe. I didn't notice it was wrong until it was already baked. It doesn't taste very good, but I will have to take it to a family gathering anyway. Please correct it for the benefit of others who may not notice.
