Strawberry Pretzel Salad Recipe

Cook Time: 130 minutes

This strawberry pretzel salad recipe is perfect for fans of the sweet and salty flavor pairing.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups crushed pretzels
  • cup butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 (8 ounce) frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 (3 ounce) packages strawberry-flavored Jell-O
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen strawberries

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven: Begin by gathering all your ingredients. Preheat the oven to 400F (200C).
  2. Make the pretzel crust: In a large bowl, combine the crushed pretzels, melted butter, and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Mix thoroughly until everything is well-combined.
  3. Press the crust: Press the pretzel mixture into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish, creating an even layer. Bake in the preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the crust is set. Allow it to cool completely before proceeding to the next step.
  4. Prepare the cream cheese topping: In a separate large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and 1 cup of sugar. Beat the mixture with an electric mixer until smooth. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping, blending everything together until creamy.
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture: Once the pretzel crust has cooled, spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the top, creating a smooth layer.
  6. Prepare the Jell-O layer: Dissolve the strawberry-flavored Jell-O in the boiling water. Stir until fully dissolved. Add the frozen strawberries to the Jell-O mixture while they are still frozen, and allow the mixture to set briefly, just until it thickens slightly.
  7. Spread the Jell-O mixture: Carefully pour the Jell-O and strawberry mixture over the cream cheese layer, spreading it evenly across the surface.
  8. Refrigerate: Refrigerate the entire dish for at least 2 hours, or until the layers are fully set and the dessert is firm to the touch.
  9. Serve and enjoy: Once the salad has set, slice into squares and serve chilled. Enjoy the perfect blend of sweet, salty, and creamy flavors!

TIPS FOR SUCCESS: I found this recipe fairly easy to follow, but I understand why some people may struggle with the layers. In my experience, I followed these steps and didn't encounter any issues with layers seeping through. 1. Make sure to allow the crust to cool completely before adding the other layers. 2. Cream the sugar and cream cheese thoroughly before spreading it on the pretzel mixture. Refrigerate for at least 30-45 minutes. 3. Prepare the Jello as directed, ensuring it is completely dissolved for two minutes before adding frozen, sliced strawberries. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently until it reaches a jellied, soft texture. I used a metal whisk for this step. 4. Pour the Jello mixture over the refrigerated cream cheese layer and refrigerate until set, which should take a couple of hours. I hope these tips help you achieve success with your dessert!

Review: I had a blast making this dessert. I made a slight tweak by adding a touch of vanilla to the cream cheese and whipped topping layer. I followed the advice of other reviewers by chilling the layers in between, which made the layering process much smoother. Ensuring the cream cheese layer reached the edges prevented the jello layer from seeping through and making the crust soggy. Overall, a fun experience! Update: Upon reflection, I adored the top and bottom layers together. However, the pretzel crust didn't quite hit the mark for me. If I were to make this again, I would double the graham cracker crust recipe instead. Another update: I decided to try a crust made from Lorna Doone cookies, and it was a significant improvement. Using two sleeves of crushed Lorna Doone cookies worked wonders. Latest update: I switched things up by using Blackberry Fusion Jello and fresh blackberries from this summer for the top layer. The result was fabulous - not as overly sweet as the strawberries.

I put a unique spin on this recipe to accommodate our gluten-intolerant family members. Instead of using pretzels, I substituted Simply Nature Cranberry/Cashew Honey Granola and added a touch of salt with the sugar and butter. It turned out to be the best gluten-free version of this dish I've ever made. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

My mother-in-law used to prepare this salad. Some folks consider it a dessert, so it can be served either as a salad or a dessert. It is incredibly tasty. Bringing it to a potluck birthday party.

I enjoy using fresh sliced strawberries in this recipe. Should I add more boiled or cold water when using fresh strawberries? Also, I'm curious why this dish is called a salad when it actually resembles a jello fruit dessert.

I absolutely adore this recipe! The combination of the salty pretzel and the sweetness of the other ingredients is a total winner. It has quickly become a potluck favorite. My only suggestion would be to make the pretzel crust easier to cut. Perhaps adding more butter or reducing the baking time would help with that.
