I haven't had many dump cakes in my life because usually they are overly sweet, too much dry cake batter left on top or just not good. Chalk it up to inexperience or not. This dump cake is fantastic! It's not too sweet and melting the butter and pouring it over the cake mix leaves virtually no dry batter. I pretty much stuck to the recipe except for adding the nuts and the caramel sauce that my husband picked up was salted caramel, but I will use that every time I make this because it cuts down on the sweet. Served it up with some vanilla ice-cream and a little drizzle of extra caramel and you have a very satisfying dessert. May try it with some whipped topping or whipped cream tomorrow. This would be a nice holiday dessert with the warm spices in the cake mix and pie filling, but I wouldn't turn it away if it was the 4th of July. Duncan Hines carries a spice cake if you are looking for one and we got ours from Kroger and I think that Walmart carries them too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe Pam!

I halved the recipe and used a 8x8 pan. I cut up a chopped fresh apple w/ raisins and topped it with the filling. Omitted the camel sauce and added the butter to the dried mix. It was wonderful w/ vanilla ice cream.

I added a tsp of vanilla and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon to the canned apple filling as I cut the apples in smaller pieces . This enhanced the apple flavor and gave pieces of apples throughout instead of big chunks of apple. Otherwise followed the recipe and it was a hit. Topped with vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of caramel. Delish!!!

Update: Made this yesterday again for book club and it was a hit; people asked for the recipe! Have been using Lucky Leaf canned apples filling and this time I used a can of their caramel apples and a can of fried apple. Was concerned that the cake mix would stay dry but it was mostly covered by the butter and baked nicely. Used mini pecan pieces instead of walnuts so, no burned topping. Very easy! I’ve made this twice now for my book club ladies and they love it! For one of the cans I used caramel apple pie filling and it adds a nice flavor. Couldn’t find caramel sauce so used caramel syrup instead. Also drizzled the syrup over the melted butter. The apples do not turn mushy. This is a keeper!

I used two sticks of butter instead of one, and I topped it with pecans instead of walnuts. It was fabulous. All of my guests enjoyed it.

I use Caramel Apple Pie Filling and always a winner. Serve with ice cream drizzled with Caramel Topping.

Since I’m a cook, not a baker, this is the perfect recipe for me (I don’t measure and improvise both ingredients and techniques)! My oven runs hot, so I know to check earlier than stated cook time. Well, this time I didn’t check soon enough and cake was HARD! While waiting for everything to cool enough to throw away :-( , I decided to treat it like a crisp. The apples were fine, so I chopped up the cake, put everything in a bowl and topped it with vanilla almond and soy milk. YUM! It was so good that I’m intentionally overcooking it today. It tastes great, and vanilla soy or almond milk has a lot fewer calories than ice cream or whipped cream (won’t eat Cool Whip). 2nd try came out like cake. Way too sweet! I forgot that I had mixed a little bourbon with the caramel the first time, and I salted the caramel. I salted the top this time and added cinnamon which just made it sweeter. I may have to actually follow the recipe! PS After it cooled, it firmed up, plus lots of crunchy nuts, so it was still great broken up with vanilla almond milk!

Outstanding! Didn’t have a spice cake mix, only white. Added extra spices to the apples to make up for it. Didn’t have Carmel sauce so omitted it. Like pecans better so used them. By the time the oven was preheated my cake was ready to put in. Perfect if you need something fast. I usually make stuff from scratch but will definitely be making this again. Thanks for the recipe!

It came out perfectly! I couldn’t find a spice cake mix so I used yellow cake mix and added my own spice to the cake mix!! Also used pecans cuz that’s what I had in the pantry!

So easy and so delicious! Don’t skimp on the caramel sauce or the nuts; they help take it over the top. You’re going to want ice cream or a glass of milk because it’s very sweet, but that’s never bothered me.

Absolutely delicious and one that I would, and have, recommended to my friends. I skipped the nuts because of allergies but everything else was perfect. I agree with it being very sweet. I did not try the salted caramel but I will be giving that a try next time. I served it with vanilla ice cream. It was perfect. It gets me excited for fall and it is perfect for that fall-like feeling that is in the air already.
