Plum Cake Recipe
This delicious plum cake is easy to make and perfect for a cozy dessert. With a soft, buttery texture and the sweetness of ripe plums, it's a treat that everyone will love.
Ingredients
- cup white sugar
- cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 12 medium ripe plums, halved and pitted
- 1 tablespoons cinnamon sugar, or to taste
Directions
Step 1: Begin by gathering all your ingredients. This will make the process smoother and quicker.
Step 2: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C) and grease a 10-inch springform pan. Make sure to coat the pan evenly to ensure the cake doesn't stick.
Step 3: In a large bowl, combine the sugar and butter. Beat them together with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. This step is important for a soft, airy cake texture.
Step 4: Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Make sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next one.
Step 5: In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture, stirring until well combined. This will create a smooth batter.
Step 6: Transfer the batter into the prepared springform pan and smooth the surface with a spatula. Ensure that the batter is evenly spread out in the pan.
Step 7: Carefully arrange the plum halves on top of the batter, cut-side up, pressing them gently into the batter. This will allow the plums to sink slightly during baking, giving the cake its characteristic look.
Step 8: Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar evenly over the plums. The cinnamon will add a lovely warmth and depth of flavor to the cake.
Step 9: Bake the cake in the preheated oven on the lowest rack for 40 to 50 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.
Step 10: Once done, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. You can serve it warm or allow it to cool to room temperature whichever you prefer!

Ideal for late summer and early autumn when plums are in season, this cake is perfect for those looking for a simple yet delicious dessert. Let's explore more about this cake, its origin, regional variations, and interesting facts.
History of the Easy Plum Cake
The plum cake is a traditional dessert that dates back to the 19th century in Europe. It has roots in German and English culinary traditions, where it was commonly made during the harvest season when fruits like plums and other stone fruits were plentiful. Early versions of plum cakes were dense and often served as festive treats for special occasions such as holidays and family gatherings. Over the years, the cake has evolved, and modern versions, like this easy plum cake, offer a more accessible, quick, and lighter way to enjoy this classic dessert. Today, it remains a favorite fall treat across various cultures, celebrated for its simplicity and the seasonal freshness of plums.
Regional Features
While plum cakes are enjoyed worldwide, they are particularly popular in regions where plums are abundant. In Germany, for example, plum cakes (known as "Zwetschgenkuchen") are commonly made using a yeast dough or a sponge cake base. However, the "Easy Plum Cake" recipe is a more simplified version, perfect for anyone seeking a quick and easy treat. The cake is commonly served in Central and Eastern Europe, where plums grow in abundance. In the United States, its not uncommon to find similar versions of plum cake during the fall, particularly in areas where stone fruits are harvested.
How It Differs from Similar Dishes
The Easy Plum Cake stands out from other fruit cakes due to its simplicity. Unlike more complex fruit cakes, such as the traditional English fruitcake or the German Stollen, which are rich with spices, dried fruits, and nuts, this cake focuses on fresh plums and a light, airy batter. The use of cinnamon sugar as a topping adds a lovely flavor contrast, balancing the sweetness of the plums with a hint of warmth. Additionally, it doesn't require advanced baking skills or a long preparation time, making it accessible for novice bakers. The emphasis on fresh plums makes it particularly light and juicy compared to denser fruit cakes.
Where Is It Typically Served?
The Easy Plum Cake is commonly served as a casual dessert or a snack during afternoon tea, especially in Germany, Austria, and the United States. Its simplicity makes it a perfect treat for family gatherings, potlucks, or casual get-togethers. Its also a popular choice for bake sales and local fairs. This cake is often paired with a cup of coffee or tea, making it a delightful addition to any informal gathering. In some regions, it may also be enjoyed as a breakfast or brunch item due to its light texture.

When I put the batter in the pan, it was insufficient to cover the bottom of the pan, so I quickly made another recipe of batter to add on top. It took almost twice as long to bake, but was wonderful! 10/10!! Love it!

Everyone that had a slice loved this tasty dessert. It was moist , sweet and tangy . The plums were a perfect contrast and balanced out the sweetness . Received lots of compliments and I loved how simple it was to make . I recommend making double the recipe . I read the previous feedback and based on this I doubled my quantity and it was perfect.

I used a 9”x12” pan. Cooked for 40 minutes. My plums were on the firm side, I suggest using a riper plum. The cake tastes like a snickerdoodle and balances the flavors with the plums nicely. I should have doubled the batter as this didn’t spread to the edge of the pan. When done the cake needs to be even with the plums.

I had the same issue as the last comment. The 1x quantity barely made enough batter to cover the bottom of a 10" pan so I put it in an 8". Fingers crossed. Are the quantities correct or is there a technical issue?

I got this recipe from my grandmother. It is one of my favorite cakes that she made. I found some prune plums recently and actually made the cake. It has been years since I've made it. I enjoyed every bite.
