Milly's Oatmeal Brownies

Origin and History: The oatmeal brownie, as seen in Milly's recipe, is a modern take on the traditional brownie, which has its roots in the United States. The classic brownie originated in the late 19th century, typically featuring chocolate as its main ingredient. Over time, variations have emerged, incorporating diverse elements such as nuts, fruits, and grains. Millys Oatmeal Brownies represent a delightful innovation by substituting traditional flour-based recipes with wholesome oats, offering a chewy texture and a hearty flavor that appeals to those looking for a more rustic dessert.

Regional Features: While oatmeal-based treats can be found across many cultures, this specific recipe holds a distinctive American twist, combining the texture of a traditional brownie with the health-consciousness of oatmeal. In regions where oatmeal is a breakfast staple, this recipe might be considered a comforting, sweet snack that bridges the gap between breakfast and dessert. Particularly in North America, oatmeal desserts like this one often enjoy popularity during colder months, adding warmth and comfort to gatherings.

Differences from Similar Dishes: Unlike regular brownies, which are dense and rich with chocolate, Milly's Oatmeal Brownies are lighter in texture and feature the earthiness of oats. The addition of ingredients such as raisins, walnuts, and chocolate chips adds extra depth and flavor, setting it apart from other oatmeal-based desserts. Furthermore, the use of brown sugar and a modest amount of butter gives the brownies a uniquely chewy, almost cookie-like consistency, making them distinct from the more cake-like or fudgy traditional brownies.

Where to Serve: Millys Oatmeal Brownies are versatile and can be served in a variety of settings. They are perfect for casual gatherings, afternoon teas, or as an on-the-go snack. Due to their hearty nature, they also make a fantastic breakfast or brunch item when paired with a hot drink like coffee, cappuccino, or tea. In the colder months, these brownies are an excellent choice for holiday parties or as a comforting treat after a chilly day outdoors. They can be served at bake sales, picnics, or any occasion where a mix of sweet and wholesome is desired.

Fun Facts: Oats are considered a superfood due to their rich nutritional profile, providing fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. In this recipe, the oats not only provide a chewy texture but also enhance the healthiness of the brownies. Some people enjoy experimenting with various add-ins, such as dried fruits, nuts, or even coconut, which can alter the flavor profile and create unique variations of the recipe. Interestingly, Millys personal favorite version is made without any additional mix-ins, allowing the flavor of the oats to shine through. The oatmeal base also makes these brownies a great breakfast option, combining the comfort of a pastry with the health benefits of whole grains.

So, whether you enjoy them as a snack, dessert, or breakfast, Milly's Oatmeal Brownies offer a delightful twist on the classic brownie, with a rustic, comforting texture and a range of customizable options. Enjoy the chewy goodness of oatmeal while indulging in this modern American classic!

FAQ about Milly's Oatmeal Brownies Recipe

To keep your oatmeal brownies fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate them for up to a week. You can also freeze the brownies for up to 3 months. Just wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before freezing.

Yes, this recipe is quite flexible. You can substitute butter with coconut oil or vegetable oil. You can replace the raisins with dried cranberries or apricots. Additionally, feel free to experiment with different mix-ins such as chocolate chips, nuts, or seeds. If you're looking for a gluten-free option, you can try using a gluten-free flour blend.

If your brownies are too soft in the middle, it's likely they need more time to bake. The recommended baking time is 20 to 25 minutes, but if the brownies appear underdone, you can leave them in for an additional 5–10 minutes, checking frequently. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with just a few moist crumbs.

Yes, you can prepare these brownies ahead of time. In fact, the flavor might even improve after a day or two as the ingredients settle together. Just make sure to store them properly in an airtight container, and if you're freezing them, allow them to cool completely before wrapping and freezing.

Dry brownies may be the result of overbaking, or the recipe may have been measured incorrectly, especially the flour or oats. Make sure not to overmix the batter, as this can lead to a dry texture. Also, check your oven temperature with an oven thermometer to ensure it’s accurate, as an oven that runs too hot can overbake the brownies.

Yes, these oatmeal brownies freeze well. After they have cooled completely, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or foil, then place them in an airtight container or a freezer bag. When you're ready to enjoy them, let them thaw at room temperature for a few hours.

You can use quick oats instead of rolled oats, but the texture of the brownies will be different. Rolled oats give the brownies a chewier, heartier texture, while quick oats will result in a softer, finer crumb.

To make these oatmeal brownies more moist, consider adding an extra egg or using half coconut oil and half butter. You can also try adding a tablespoon of sour cream or applesauce to the batter, which will help keep the brownies moist.

Even though in the recipe I say to add your choice of ingredients... (choc chips, nuts, raisins, toffee bits, etc.) the truth is that I personally prefer them with NOTHING. I love to eat them in the morning with a nice cup of creamy latte or cappuccino. That way I can enjoy the flavor of the oatmeal.... YUMMMM I am very happy you are enjoying my recipe and thanks to everyone for posting a review!!!

I successfully made a half recipe using an 8x8 glass pan brushed with avocado oil. Quite literally halved all ingredients, weighing everything with a digital scale. Our mix-ins were butterscotch chips and dried cranberries. I was very lazy and made this as a one-bowl recipe. I melted the butter in the microwave with the sugars, then followed the rest of the directions. The only thing I might change would be to spin the oats in a blender or food processor just a bit so the bite would not be as “rustic” if you get my meaning ;)

Delicious & easy to make. Took longer to cook than described. 35 min at 350 & then I turned off the oven & left in another 7 min. Still a tiny bit gooey but they set up with time. I added 3/4 c each of dark cc & dried cherries, & about 1/2 c chopped walnuts & 1 tsp cinnamon. As another review stated, these are almost cobbler-like & would be divine warm w vanilla ice cream. Will definitely make again. Thank you for the recipe!

five stars for a snap to prepare, with endless possibilities of add-ins. tasty, moist and delicious. used almonds, walnuts, butterscotch, chocolate, and white chocolate chips, and a tsp of espresso powder. 25 min in oven was perfect. these could be made for a last-minute function. I did not bother grease/flour the pan; just spayed it with regular cooking spray. No stick. Used the old fashioned rolled outs out of preference. I have a couple of apples I want to use up; think I will make this with nuts, apples, and some cinnamon next time.

Great recipe!! I used chopped walnuts and raisins as my "mix-ins", between 1/2 cup and 3/4 cup each. I also combined the dry ingredients first before mixing into the wet ingredients. This includes tossing the raisins and walnuts into the dry - it helped separate the raisins (sticky and clumped together coming out of the box). Baked in my edge pan and it was perfection!

Made these for a tailgate— they’re fine. I loooove oatmeal chocolate chip so yummy! Didn’t do the raisins bc it was for a crowd of haters, and also had to forego walnuts due to a friend’s nut allergy, however still pretty yummy! I am a sweet treat lover yet this was still a little too sweet imo. I added some flaky salt on top and that helped w the sweetness. One thing that is super important for anyone attempting this: it takes WAY LONGER to bake. In 20-25 minutes you’ll get a beautiful golden color, but it will be reeeeally underdone. Wiggling like jello when I went to take it out. I ended up having to put them back in with foil on top for an additional 10-15 minutes. Be prepared for 30-35 min bake time!! Otherwise pretty yummy! 7.5/10

Addictive that is all I can say! Made for friends, everyone loved them and asked for the recipe. Make sure that you mix the brown sugar and butter until creamy before adding eggs. I used dark brown sugar because that was all I had. I think that it added some depth to the taste. For add ins, I only used golden raisins and chopped walnuts. About 3/4 cup of each. Next time I will try the chocolate chips and coconut. Any way you make people will love it. They are delicious and easy. Thank you Milly!

Great recipe. I use a trail mix with salted nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate chunks as the mix-in and sprinkle a little coarse salt over the top before they go in the oven.

The key to making these perfect is to have them even thickness and bake correct time. I used parchment lined light-colored Teflon pan and baked about 23 min. I put big dobs of dough into pan and then smoothed with rubber spatula to same thickness. Checked after 20 min and one side was done (then I could see that this was a bit thinner) so I covered that with foil. A few minutes later - checking every minute - they were all done. When finger pressed lightly into top makes no indentation, they are ready, but don't wait any longer. Then cut them up as soon as cool and refrigerate. Otherwise they will dry out. They really are more like breakfast bars, but delicious. I used about 6 oz chocolate chips, but imagine if more fillers are used it would make them drier.

Made these bars today and they are a definite keeper. They turned out like thick, soft and chewy oatmeal cookies; absolutely delicious! I added raisins and chopped dried cherries to my bars for some added flavor along with tsp cinnamon and a 1/2 tsp ground cloves. In addition; I refrigerated the dough for and hour to solidify the butter and I think that it may have helped improve the texture of the bars?? I will certainly be making these again maybe with dates and pecans...mmmm! Thanks for sharing this recipe.

A bit disappointed- I don’t think the brownies were overcooked, but they were a little on the dry side. Came out slightly golden on the edges. Oh well!

I didn't add nuts. I think I could have added more chocolate chips. The texture was nice. The flavor was like an oatmeal cookie, which is what I expected. I'll make these again.

Delicious with mini chocolate chips and walnuts. Added 2-3 Tablespoons of almond butter and 1/4 Cup of flax seeds for crunch and a little bit of healthy.

I reduced the granulated sugar to a 1/4 cup and used KAF white whole wheat flour to make them healthy-ish. Healthy adjacent. Healthy's down the street neighbor.

I made these brownies for a casual dinner at our neighbors’ house. They were a big hit. Their 2-year-old loved them so much he asked for one for breakfast the following morning. Delicious and easy!
