How to Make Breakfast Sausage Casserole

This recipe is simple to prepare and yields a delicious result. Below, you'll find a step-by-step guide to making this casserole. Lets take a look at the process:

Step 1: Cook the Sausage

Begin by browning the sausage in a skillet over medium heat. Stir frequently until the sausage is fully cooked and crumbly, which should take about 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease. Once done, stir in the chopped green onions and spread the sausage mixture evenly at the bottom of a prepared baking dish.

Step 2: Layer the Casserole

Top the sausage mixture with a layer of frozen hash browns. Then, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the hash browns.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce

In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and gravy mix until smooth. Pour this mixture over the casserole, making sure it is evenly distributed. Sprinkle the top with a pinch of paprika for added flavor.

Step 4: Bake the Casserole

Place the casserole in a preheated oven set to 325F (165C) and bake for about 1 hour, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the casserole stand for 10 minutes before serving to allow it to firm up.

This recipe is very simple to prepare. I used turkey sausage, and the results were amazing. It is very good with a little green salsa and avocado on top, says Catherine.

Very tasty dish! The only thing I may change is layering the hash browns first (as a crust) then sausage. Hubby already requested it again, according to Melelani Lawrence.

Ive cooked this many times, its great when guests visit and especially on Christmas morning with a side of sliced tomatoes and toast. I dont change anything and its fabulous, raves Clare Hutchins.

This is a GREAT recipe. Very easy to prepare and everyone loved it! I put the layers together the night before, then added the egg mixture and baked it in the morning. Changes: Used 8 eggs instead of 6 Used 9 x 13 casserole dish Used pre cooked, packaged breakfast sausage Covered with foil for first 40 minutes, then removed foil so it could brown a little

I made this many times and it's always a BIG HIT! I sprinkle a little cheese on top of the patato's and bake it for about 45 mins. I then take it out of the oven and I cover the top with cheese and bake it for about 15 mins more till melted and slightly brown on top.

Made as is except used 8 eggs - 6 would definitely not have been enough. Sauted the hash browns first - then used them as the bottom layer as have some other people. Added cooked sausage, a small amount of the cheese, and then sprinkled 2 chopped jarred peppers . Placed in fridge overnight, then added the egg/milk/gravy mixture the following morning and sprinkled with remaining cheese. Covered casserole with foil and baked per instructions. Was not dry, and people enjoyed it. Will make again.

Love it! Definitely ensure hash browns are dethawed. It took me longer than 60 minutes at 325, so I turned it up to 350 at 40 minutes and uncovered the last 10 minutes of the 60 minute cook time. I substituted sausage for ham. And added top layer of cheese towards the last 30 minutes of cooking. Let it rest. Came out beautifully. I could cut square pieces that looked like I knew what I was doing!

Was Pretty Good. Followed some of the reviewers and browned hashbrowns before hand and used 8 eggs. Thought I had a packet of gravy but I didn't so made some with the sausage from a recipe on this site. Sausage Gravy went on the bottom, hashbrowns, cheese than eggs. Cooked with foil for 40 min, removed, topped with more cheese and finished last 15 uncovered.

I did have to make a few changes because I had ham instead of sausage. I used fresh shredded potatoes (no hash browns in the house). I sauteed green onion bottoms In a little butter before adding the potatoes. Then I layered diced ham on top of the potatoes and then I followed the recipe for the rest of it. Sprinkled the chopped onion greens on top. Seems like an easy versatile recipe that my family loved.

For those who are concerned about gluten, I was able to find a gluten-free gravy mix in the supermarket --- it's made by Pioneer --- and it worked great in this recipe! I don't know that you need to tweak the recipe, but because of other reviews, I added two eggs and precooked the hashbrowns a bit. It was a hit and served 6 adults easily with a little left over. I will make this one again!

I made this today. I do agree with some of tje other reviews in that it needs more eggs and the hashbrowns need to be crisped before cooking. I added sautéed jalapeños, green pepper, and mushrooms. It was very good.

Made it in a 9 x 13 dish, used 8 eggs, half and half instead of milk, and a blend of half-empty bags of cheese. It was awesome! Definitely making this one again!!!

Great recipe! I took the advice of others and used 8 eggs. I also used real potatoes (rather than frozen hash browns), and browned them first. I sautéed 1/2 large white onion with the sausage. I also baked for 50 minutes covered, then removed the foil and baked for 10 more minutes. Will definitely use this recipe again.

Very, very good I made this twice: First time this original recipe, second time used 9 eggs, sausage and ham, schredded red potatoes with grated apples, the apples cut down on the salt and gave just a hint of sweetness that everyone loved.

This was tasty. I made a few minor tweaks after reading the user reviews - I only used 4 eggs, added seasoning, used pepper jack cheese, and I let the mix sit in the fridge for a few hours before I baked it. So good.

I modified this slightly and used the trader Joe’s hash browns that I cut up since that’s what I had on hand. It came out great! Skipped the gravy and scallions since I didn’t have any ☺️ still tasted awesome.

I think it turned out great! I put the hash browns on the bottom, added two small low-heat peppers, used shredded colby-jack cheese, and since I'm gluten sensitive, I used GLUTEN FREE country gravy mix. My husband ate two servings!

This was very good and so easy to make. I didn’t follow the recipe completely. I used hash brown patties instead of the loose ones. I think it would be better using those. But it was still really good and I will definitely make again

This is my go-to brunch casserole! I've made it for years. It's the gravy mix that is the secret ingredient!!!! I'm always asked to bring this to morning tailgates, girls' weekends, and brunch gatherings. I do put the hash browns on the bottom first and actually crisp them about 15 minutes while I prepare the rest of the ingredients. It's easy to adjust to spicy flavors too. You've gotta try it! I make this recipe every three or four months. I love it because I put it in the refrigerator and reheat a serving in the morning and it is a very fast, delicious breakfast with little work. I do not use the onions or paprika, personal taste. My ex-wife and daughter like it as well so they get 1/2 to 2/3 of the casserole each time I make it.

My adjustments were to leave out the gravy mix and add 1 tsp cornstarch. I used more green onion and 9 eggs. I mixed it all up the night before and refrigerated. I set it out about 30 minutes before baking to come closer to room temperature. It was excellent!!
