Scalloped Potatoes au Gratin Recipe

Cook Time: 135 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup, divided
  • 1 cup cooked ham slices, or to taste, divided (Optional)
  • 6 large russet potatoes, or more to taste, thinly sliced and divided
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced and divided
  • 1 cups shredded Italian cheese blend, or more to taste, divided
  • cup milk

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).

Step 2: Spread about 2/3 of one can of mushroom soup into the bottom of a 9-inch square baking dish.

Step 3: Layer approximately 1/2 of the ham slices, 1/3 of the potato slices, 1/2 of the onion slices, and 1/3 of the Italian cheese blend over the mushroom soup.

Step 4: Layer about 1/2 of the remaining potatoes on top of the first layers.

Step 5: Mix the remaining soup from the first can with milk and pour over the potatoes.

Step 6: Finish the layering with the remaining ham slices, remaining onion slices, about 1/2 of the remaining cheese, and the rest of the potato slices.

Step 7: Spread the second can of mushroom soup over the top layer and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.

Step 8: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.

Step 9: After 1 hour, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 45 minutes.

Step 10: Turn off the oven, replace the foil on the dish, and let the potatoes finish baking in the cooling oven for about 30 minutes, until the sauce is absorbed.

Cooks Note

You can use a Mexican-style cheese blend or create your own favorite cheese combination. If you prefer a saucier dish, you can skip the final 30 minutes of baking time. Ham can be used in chunks or slices and added either in a single layer at the bottom or layered as instructed in the recipe.
