Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic Recipe

Cook Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large head cabbage, cored and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • teaspoon onion powder
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Directions

  1. Gather all ingredients to ensure everything is ready for cooking.
  2. Place the bacon in a large stockpot. Cook over medium-high heat until crispy, about 10 minutes.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot. Stir occasionally until the onion caramelizes, about 10 minutes.
  4. Once the onion is caramelized, immediately stir in the sliced cabbage. Continue cooking and stirring for another 10 minutes.
  5. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir well to evenly coat the cabbage and bacon.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  7. Once done, remove from heat and enjoy!

Rewritten review: This dish is incredibly flavorful and satisfying! Pork fat, onion, fresh garlic, and cabbage make for a delicious combination that is a hidden gem of Tennessee cuisine. I'm grateful for this recipe being shared with the community. A friend and co-worker of mine, who is Cherokee, couldn't stop praising this dish for years. I was initially hesitant due to concerns about its greasiness, but once I tried it, I was blown away! Using 'fatback' instead of bacon added a unique smoky touch without being overly salty and free from nitrites. Overall, it's a fantastic Southern recipe that I'm glad to have discovered. I recommend trying red Savoy cabbage alongside the green variety for its crispness and sweeter taste. Personally, I would love to see a recipe for Southern-style baked beans next! - Mitchy48

I have been preparing this recipe for many years now. It's delicious when made with sliced Polish sausage instead of bacon, and I love to add diced bell peppers regardless of the meat I use, or sometimes even a combination of both. It can also be cooked in a little water or with chicken or beef broth for added flavor, making it less labor-intensive to prepare in a covered stew pot over low heat instead of frying. Both methods yield delicious results. My version includes a whole head of cabbage, a couple of medium to large onions, a diced green bell pepper, and a whole Polish sausage. Season with salt and pepper as desired. Simply throw all the ingredients into a pot and simmer gently until the cabbage is tender. You can also add diced potatoes for extra heartiness. This one-pot meal is quick, healthy, and tasty, suitable for any time of the year. Not only is it budget-friendly to prepare a large pot of it, but it also reheats well in the microwave.

This recipe is fantastic! A quick tip: before covering the dish for the final 30 minutes, I deglazed the cabbage with 1/4 cup of chicken broth. I also believe there may be a mistake in the recipe as it seems excessive to use a tablespoon of salt. When I halved the recipe, I only used 1/2 a teaspoon of salt, which was perfect. This dish pairs wonderfully as a side with baked ham and scalloped potatoes.

I decided to use twice as much bacon and then skimmed off some of the excess fat. I also threw in a dash of apple cider vinegar and voila! Absolute perfection :) This was my first attempt at this recipe and definitely won't be my last. Thank you!

Delicious and simple to prepare. Thank you for the recipe! I made some adjustments to suit my taste. I opted for 200g of bacon without adding any extra salt since bacon already has a salty flavor, and I increased the amount of paprika. The simmering process was only 15 minutes for me, and towards the end, I tossed in 100g of cooked gnocchi to make it a complete meal. Just before serving, I sprinkled about 100g of grated Cheddar on top and mixed it in until it melted. I also garnished the dish with freshly chopped coriander.

To make it truly satisfying, be sure to include cooked noodles such as Amish pot pie noodles and cook until they become slightly crispy.

Fantastic taste! I added approximately 2 tablespoons of white wine during the final simmer to deglaze the pan.

I absolutely adore this recipe! I substituted bacon bits for actual bacon since I didn't have any on hand, which meant there was no bacon grease involved. I sautéed the bacon bits and onion together, skipped the fresh garlic, and then added the cabbage, a cup of water, and the rest of the ingredients to simmer for 30 minutes. The result is absolutely delicious. My husband usually removes his teeth to eat, so I continued cooking his portion until the cabbage was soft, almost like a stew. Surprisingly, he enjoyed it as well! Given that we are following a cholesterol-conscious diet, using bacon bits was a helpful tweak. Thank you for sharing such a fantastic recipe!

I omitted the bacon grease in this recipe (which I had cooked the day before) and instead opted to fry in my cast iron skillet using avocado oil for a healthier choice. I also added an apple, turmeric curcumin, and a couple of pinches of Stevia powder. For my next attempt, I plan to include a handful of raisins for a touch of sweetness. A tablespoon of vinegar might also be a nice addition. This recipe is quite versatile and can be easily customized with your choice of vegetables and seasonings. I look forward to making it again soon.

While it was cooking, I felt it required an extra touch, so I sprinkled some Lawry's season salt and added half a stick of butter, then cooked it slightly longer than directed. The result was delicious! Surprisingly, it tasted even better the following day. On 23rd December 2019, I decided to include half a pound of wide noodles, and the dish became even more delightful.

I'm not familiar with Southern cuisine, and this side dish was new to me, so please keep that in mind as you read my review. Overall, I believe the recipe has great potential, but the way it was prepared didn't quite work for me. Cooking the cabbage for 30 minutes at the end was far too long in my opinion. It turned the dish into a mushy consistency, and it became too watery with the pot lid on. I should have taken it off the heat as soon as the cabbage began to soften and skipped the remaining simmering phase entirely. Furthermore, I found the dish to be overly salty when using the recommended 1 tablespoon of salt. I would suggest starting with 1 teaspoon and adjusting to taste as needed, as the bacon already contributes a significant amount of saltiness. Despite these issues, I appreciate the uniqueness of this side dish and intend to give it another try with some modifications.
