Big Al's K.C. Bar-B-Q Sauce Recipe
BBQ Sauce Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups ketchup
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 cups brown sugar
- 1 cups red wine vinegar
- cup unsulfured molasses
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 teaspoons hickory-flavored liquid smoke
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- teaspoon garlic powder
- teaspoon onion powder
- teaspoon celery seed
- teaspoon cayenne pepper
- teaspoon chili powder
- teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions:
- Start by gathering all of the ingredients needed for the recipe.
- In a large saucepan, combine the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, unsulfured molasses, butter, and hickory-flavored liquid smoke.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir until all ingredients are well combined.
- Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, celery seed, cayenne pepper, chili powder, and cinnamon. Stir to evenly distribute the seasonings.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for up to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, allow it to simmer for a bit longer. If you prefer a thinner consistency, reduce the simmering time or add a little water to adjust the texture.
- Once the sauce has reached your desired thickness, remove it from the heat.
- Enjoy the homemade BBQ sauce with your favorite meats or dishes. Optionally, brush it onto meat during the last 10 minutes of cooking for extra flavor.
Recipe Tip: Brush the sauce onto meat during the last 10 minutes of cooking for an added boost of flavor.

Great! For anyone who like's sweet baby rays brand barbeque sauce, this is it! And advice to anyone wanting to make it, don't leave out the liquid smoke! I didn't have any, so I was just going to leave it out, but then my Dad offered to buy me some and when we added it it was SO much better and really added to the flavor. Only suggestions are that oil can be substituted for the butter or left out alltogether, the molasses can be reduced and it's still sweet, and the chili powder, cayenne, and pepper should probably be doubled. Red pepper is also wonderful for the flavor.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this sauce!!!! This will be "one and only" BBQ sauce from now on. It's thick, sweet and spicy and beautiful in color! To try it out..first I cut the servings to 12. I followed the scaled measurements except only used a pinch of cayenne and chili powder. Concern was it may be too spicy for kids. I did not have celery seed, so I had to leave it out. If you like a sweet and spicy sauce you must try this recipe. I will use this on chicken, pulled pork and ribs. UPDATE: I've made this again using the celery seed and think I like the taste without it. Also for a nice thick sauce it is necessary to simmer on low for at least 20 minutes.

Al must be holding something back if this is his restaurant version! This Barbeque Sauce needs some tweaking-Cut way back on the Red Wine Vinegar, double the spices (not the salt) and more Liquid Smoke. Also, use half tomato sauce and half tomato paste simmer about 10 min. longer than the recipe suggests-This will give you a thicker sauce.

This was great...I don’t really like to use dry spice so I had another recipe that used fresh onion and garlic so I melted butter and sautéed a small onion for about 5-6 minutes and added a clove of garlic. Then followed through with the remaining recipe minus the cayenne pepper. It wa fabulous?? I used it to make the slow cooker pulled pork??

Perfect consistency for ribs or chicken. Was delicious as is- perfect combination of tangy, sweet, and a kick of spicy. I made a pan of long, slow baked baby back ribs (light rub, tightly foil covered roasting pan, 200F oven for 3 hours). Glazed the ribs, put under broiler 5 min, re-glazed and broiled again 5 min. Perfect

My family loves this recipe! I make it all the time in large batches. I also freeze it in Mason jars so I have it on hand for BBQ recipes. I use an organic ketchup and make my own brown sugar by mixing up cane sugar and molasses together. I also cut back on the red wine vinegar to 1/4 cup as my family likes a sweeter taste with a hint of vinegar.

I make this in a crock pot and three different levels of heat. It thickens overnight while cooking in the crockpot. I must warn you that you may wake up hungry in the middle of the night because it smells so good! Then I can it in jars and give away as Christmas gifts. Been doing this for several years.

Wow wow wow, after reading the reviews I couldn’t help but to make this recipe. Followed the directions as directed and added 1tsp dry mustard, 1 tsp cumin,1TBS honey and 1 TBS Worcestershire this is by far my go to BBQ sauce of the future.

I've tried to make this twice now. The first time I inadvertently used blackstrap molasses and it was an inky, bitter mess that had to be tossed. Today I remade it with mild flavor unsulphered molasses and it's still kind of "meh." Having lived in Missouri most of my life and eaten (at least) my weight in K.C. barbecue over the years as well as other regional barbecue types, this recipe as a Kansas City sauce falls short for me. Not thick enough at 20 minutes. But if you go too much over, the molasses takes on more of the bitter flavor. If I try this a third time, I will make a paste of the spices in about a Tablespoon of tomato paste cooked in the pan prior to adding the rest of the ingredients.

I just made this to go on some homemade pulled pork. Awesome!! I didn't have celery seed so I subbed with celery salt and cut back on salt. I did cook for more like 40 minutes because I wanted it thicker. I do believe I'll be making this again. Thanks Al

Admittedly, I did not follow the recipe verbatim because I didn't have the exact ingredients, but it still tasted great! We don't buy ketchup (rarely use it at home), but have packages from restaurants in the fridge. I managed to come up with just under one cup of ketchup, so I halved the spices in the recipe. No tomato sauce, so used a 6 oz. can of tomato paste. No red wine vinegar , so used rice wine vinegar. Reduced the cayenne a tad and added ghost pepper salt to taste in lieu of salt and pepper. I had everything else on hand, so I just used half of what the recipe called for. Using tomato paste may have produced a richer sauce, but it worked beautifully. We basted hamburger patties with this just as they were put on the grill. Excellent results! Even though we made a smaller portion, there is quite a bit left after making eight burgers, so we will put it in the fridge and use again soon. Since it is spring, it probably won't be long before we throw something else on the grill. I will update after our next cookout!

This recipe is always a hit. I sub apple cider vinegar every now and then and it gives it a much different taste, but is also outstanding.

First time I made this Amazing BBQ sauce. I substituted the molasses for honey, since I couldn't find unsulfured molasses where I live. While it was simmering, I would taste test it. It tasted amazing. We used the entire amount of the BBQ sauce on 3 racks of ribs, it was awesome. The only thing I would change is just add a bit more cayenne and chili powders for a bit more zip and try fresh onion and garlic for the powdered ones. Other than that it is better than any store bought BBQ sauce around. It is now going to be my go to BBQ sauce.

Marine Sergeant Ethan Arguello, originally from west Texas, Midland, my taste for BBQ sauce has the west Texas favoritism. I’ve traveled from coast to coast and this one is up there with the best. Thank you for the recipe! I made this for family, and it’s delicious!

OMG! I just made this and haven't even put it on anything yet...just a taste test ..I'll never buy or use another BBQ sauce...so easy to make and scummy! Just wondering how long will it last if leftover in fridge.
