Creamy Hot Chocolate Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe yields 8 servings.
- 1 (14 ounce) can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
- cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 cups hot water
- 3 mini marshmallows
Directions
- In a large saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt over medium heat. Stir the ingredients together until well combined.
- Gradually add the hot water to the mixture while stirring. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is heated through. Avoid bringing it to a boil.
- Once the hot chocolate is ready, pour it into serving cups and top with mini marshmallows.
- Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, covered. Reheat and stir before serving again.
Recipe Tips
- The hot chocolate can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Just mix it well and reheat before serving.
- If you prefer to make the hot chocolate in the microwave, combine all the ingredients (except marshmallows) in a 2-quart glass measuring cup. Microwave on high for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes. Top with marshmallows before serving.

The first time I followed the recipe to the letter. The second time, I decided to make it in a slow cooker. I started on high heat, mixed everything together, then set it to low for 2 hours and added 4 cups of milk and 2 1/2 cups of water. I kept it on warm for the rest of the evening. It turned out perfectly!

Absolutely fantastic! I prepared this dish the night before and let it simmer in the crockpot all day for my daughter's class party. It turned out wonderfully creamy and was a hit with everyone. I initially used water but will try using milk next time based on the recommendation. Update: I used a mix of skim milk and water, and it was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend trying this substitute!

I created my own version of this recipe. Instead of using 6 1/2 cups of water, I used two cups of half and half and two cups of 1% fat free milk, along with a medium-sized block of natural bittersweet cocoa. When melting everything together, I had some issues with gritty pieces of chocolate in the mixture. However, a quick blend in my blender solved that problem, and the resulting hot chocolate was the smoothest and creamiest I've ever tasted! I'm giving it four stars because of the grittiness issue.

I'm not sure how some people are experiencing gritty or bitter flavors. I followed the recipe and even tried making it Mexican style based on a suggestion in the comments. Let me tell you, I no longer want American hot chocolate! It is absolutely delicious!
