Tater Tots Casserole Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe is designed for 8 servings. Quantities adjust automatically, but cooking times and steps remain the same. Not all recipes scale perfectly.
- Cooking spray
- 1 (32 ounce) package frozen bite-size potato nuggets (such as Tater Tots), divided
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons Montreal-style steak seasoning (optional)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
- cup milk
- cup grated Cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese (for topping)
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Grease a 13x9-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Arrange 20 potato nuggets in the bottom of the prepared dish. Bake for about 10 minutes, just until they are warmed through.
- While the potatoes bake, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook and stir until the beef is fully browned, 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
- Season the beef mixture with 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, optional steak seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir to combine evenly.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, cup Cheddar cheese, and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
- Remove the baked potato nuggets from the oven and lightly mash them to cover the bottom of the casserole dish.
- Layer the seasoned ground beef over the mashed potatoes. Pour the soup mixture evenly over the beef layer.
- Top the casserole with the remaining potato nuggets. Sprinkle 1 cup of Cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, until the casserole is bubbly and the potatoes are golden brown.

I thought the recipe looked delicious, so I read some of the reviews. I can understand that recipes can be very subjective to individual tastes, so an alteration or a variation expressed here can be very helpful. However, every recipe I try on here for the first time, I make exactly as the recipe calls for. I feel that gives the recipe and the cook a fair shake at what they are tasting. It also gives me a starting point after that, to try some of the alternative variations. So I'm perplexed at rude or negative comments that usually come from trying this recipe other than "as called for", then the reviewer says it's a terrible or less than desirable recipe, that they will never try again. However, if you hadn't made the recipe "as called for", it was then really your own recipe, and therefore should not reflect negatively on the author . That said, I found this recipe to be very delicious, but just a little to moist. My oven is a bit dated, so it could have been just not baked evenly. The next time I made this, I baked it for 40 minutes with the foil on. Then I took the foil off, and then let it bake for another 10 minute with the foil off. That seemed to make the texture a little more crisp, which was more to my liking. Great share. I will definitely be making this again!!!

I was looking through all of the tater tot casserole recipes and came across this one. It was different from all the others and I decided to give it a try. It is very flavorful and delicious! I added more tater tots to the bottom of the dish (probably 30-33 tots). I also added more cheddar cheese on top. I used an 8 oz block for the whole recipe. 1/2 cup in the meat mixture and the rest on top 15 minutes before the dish was done. The steak seasoning made it really tasty. This recipe is a keeper!

LOVE this recipe!! This is such a versatile recipe too! It can be turned into a breakfast casserole, make it with chicken and cream of broccoli soup, etc. It's a keeper!

I know it's not right to review a recipe not exactly followed, but I had to share a comment. This is a very versatile recipe. Any meat...pork, chicken, turkey can be used. I had some leftover pork roast that I ground up. I did add some chopped garlic to the sauted onion rather than garlic powder. Didn't have cream of mushroom but had cream of chicken soup. I increased the milk to 3/4 cup because we like things moist. Ended up baking for 50 minutes so that the top tots were golden. Wonderful comfort food. Next time I might add a layer of green beens or other veggie to make it a bit more healthy. Thanks

20 smashed tater tots is insufficient amount to cover the bottom of the 13x9 dish called for in the recipe. As a result the 800 g bag of tater tots I purchased, was insufficient to cover the top of the casserole sufficiently. (In Canada food is sold in grams not ounces so I have no idea if the bags are the same size). Also, I would recommend heating the mushroom soup mixture slightly to make it easier to "pour" over the beef mixture. And, I added mixed vegetables to the beef mixture to make it a more rounded meal. I would make this again, making certain to buy enough tater tots to get the desired coverage.

I added a bit of cayenne pepper, Italian herbs, and Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef mixture. Also, I did bake the tator tots an additional 10 minutes to make it crispy then sprinkled the cheddar cheese over them and bake again until melted. Very delicious, many compliments. Thanks for the great recipe.

So good! The only change I made was to use part skim mozzarella instead of cheddar. If I had cheddar, I would've used it. Kind of made it less fatty, which is a good thing for my stomach.

Made as directed with the exception of cooking. The flavour was great and really enjoyed it. For the last 5 minutes I put the dish under the broiler without the cheese to crisp up the potatoes. I then added the cheese and placed it back under for about 2 minutes. I appreciated the crunchy texture. I also used an 8x11 baking dish and glad I did. A 9x13 would have thinned out the dish too much.

I loved this! I am preserving fresh onion for other meals (pandemic cooking) so I crushed up a handful of crispy onion to put on top of the ground beer. I also drained 1 can of carrots & peas and tossed it in after it was done in the oven. A few tosses with the wooden spoon and the veggies were warm too.

I’ve made this a few times. Great dish when nothing else is planned for dinner. I always have the ingredients on hand. Always yummy and easy. Tonight I made it with refrigerated shredded potatoes on the bottom because I had some I needed to use up. I bake it in an 8x8 dish instead of 9x13 and bake for 40 minutes. This keeps it creamy, not dry or soupy. I only gave 4 stars because it definitely takes more than 10 minutes to warm the potatoes in the bottom. Also, it could use a veggie addition. Next time I’m going to try adding sautéed mushrooms and using broccoli tots on top.

The family LOVED it! I added a package of sliced mushrooms and cooked it with the meat mixture. Also, I just mixed the soup mixture with the meat mixture instead of layering it. I used 96/4 ground beef and 98% fat free condensed mushroom soup only because I'm cooking healthier, which worked out great! I will definitely be making this again-yum! Thanks for sharing

To be fair, I used a store brand can of crm of mushroom soup. I think that is what ruined it for me. The big store has changed their recipe and I won't be buying anymore. But, my husband thinks it is pretty good and is finishing it. I may try this again, with quality ingredients and then see how it is.

I’m from Minnesota and have made several different tater tot hot dishes, but this is my favorite!! The first time around I followed the recipe exactly, and I was hooked! Since then I have combined this recipe with a touch of another, and together it is fabulous. True to the recipe or with my slight variation, either way is great tasting.

I made according to recipe and enjoyed it. I will make again but season heavier. And the sauce was pretty thick, I like mine a little thinner maybe add another 1/4 cup of milk or a little water or beef broth

I have used this recipe several times and will print for keeping as a favorite quick and easy recipe. I had guests for dinner and they requested the recipe. I added a carton of chopped portabello mushrooms with the onion, which adds an additional flavor and texture to the meat.

My friend and I really liked it. We both agreed it would taste great with some sour cream mixed in.
