Cook Time: 240 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

Original recipe (1X) yields 8 servings.

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
  • cup milk
  • 1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans condensed cream of chicken soup
  • cup water
  • 1 (1 ounce) packet dry au jus mix

Directions

Step 1: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, and onion soup mix. Mix everything together until well combined. Shape the mixture into 8 equal patties.

Step 2: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. While the oil is heating, dredge each patty lightly in flour just to coat it. Place the patties into the hot skillet and quickly brown them on both sides.

Step 3: Once the patties are browned, transfer them to a slow cooker. Stack the patties alternately like a pyramid for even cooking.

Step 4: In a medium bowl, mix the condensed soup, water, and au jus mix together. Stir until smooth, then pour the mixture over the beef patties in the slow cooker.

Step 5: Cover and cook on low heat for 4 to 5 hours, or until the ground beef is fully cooked and tender.

I tried making this dish last week and discovered that using an electric skillet made the whole process much easier. After browning the patties, I added the soups and let everything simmer covered for about 15-20 minutes. It turned out delicious, although a bit on the salty side. Next time, I'll use half the amount of onion soup mix and opt for low-sodium soup. I appreciated having only one pan to clean up afterward, so for me, this method was fantastic!

I have been cooking for over 35 years and let me tell you, this dish was absolutely fantastic! Even my husband and my picky kids finished their plates and asked for seconds. They said I should make this dish "anytime"! I served it with mashed potatoes, which was a perfect pairing. I opted to use only half of the dry onion and mushroom soup mix to avoid it being too salty. However, I discovered that using Cream of Chicken soup instead of Cream of Mushroom soup makes it even better! Adding the Dry Au Jus Mix to the Cream of Chicken soup may sound strange, but it transforms the flavor to be more like beef rather than chicken. I substituted water with Chicken Broth, as using beef broth would make it too overpowering. This combination resulted in a wonderfully smooth and delicious flavor. I also included a jar of drained mushrooms, which added an extra dimension to the dish. This is the third time I've made it in just a month, which is quite unusual for my household. What's great is how simple it is to prepare. The key is not to overmix the beef mixture to prevent it from becoming tough. Handle it with care, and it will hold together perfectly. I absolutely adore finding recipes like this that are not only delicious but can be easily made in a slow cooker or crockpot. Happy cooking! =)

This recipe was incredibly easy to follow and the end result was delicious. The only minor downside was that it turned out a bit salty for my taste, which is why I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5. For the next time I make it (and there definitely will be a next time), I plan on using low sodium soup and adding some quartered potatoes to balance the flavors. I prepped the hamburger patties the night before, then in the morning I simply threw everything into the crockpot before heading off to work. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

This salisbury steak is absolutely amazing! It is hands down the best I've ever tasted. I decided to make half the recipe and ended up with 4 delicious patties. I skipped the cream of chicken soup and used a jar of beef gravy instead. I also threw in a whole package of sliced baby portobello mushrooms. The sauce was simply divine, but the patties stole the show! I served it with egg noodles and green beans. Thank you!

This was the best Salisbury steak I've ever had! I added some diced potatoes about an hour before cooking, and it turned out amazing with the meat, potatoes, and gravy all coming together perfectly. Yeah!

I would give this recipe 5 stars if I didn't make so many changes, but it turned out to be a winner! I stumbled upon a review criticizing people for sharing their altered versions of the recipe, but I personally appreciate those comments and find them helpful. Since there were only two of us, I halved the recipe and used only half a packet of onion soup mix. I decided to throw in some sliced mushrooms and onions. Instead of using 2 cans of cream of chicken soup, I opted for 1 can of low-sodium cream of mushroom soup. I substituted the Au Jus mix with a can of low-sodium beef broth and added Worcestershire sauce to the meat. To elevate the gravy, I included my secret ingredient - Gravy Master, which really enhances the flavor. I paired the dish with mashed potatoes, but the standout was the delicious gravy, making the mash a mere excuse to have more of it. I always thought making Salisbury Steak was a hassle, but this recipe made it a breeze, even on a busy work night. Thank you!

This dish was excellent! We stored the leftovers in the freezer using our vacuum sealer, and they tasted just as delicious when we reheated them. The preparation time was a bit longer, but the end result was fantastic. Just like another reviewer mentioned, it's important to use lean meat. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

4 hours of cooking time? Ridiculous. It's Cream of Mushroom, not Cream of Chicken, or just leave it out and make mushroom gravy instead.

This dish is amazing and simple to prepare. It is also very tasty. My family loves a lot of gravy, so I added extra gravy packets and some beef broth to the cream of soup mixture. It turned out absolutely delicious!

I didn't have time to go to the store when I came across this recipe. I had 1 pound of ground beef and 1 pound of ground turkey. Since I didn't have au jus, I used two beef bouillon cubes dissolved in 1 cup of water instead. I substituted two cans of low sodium cream of mushroom soup for the au jus and added two tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. Instead of using dry onion soup mix, I used a diced medium onion. I followed the rest of the recipe as directed. I cooked it on high in the crock pot and the burgers reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit within two hours. The result was delicious!

I made a slight variation by adding 1 can of cream of chicken and 1 can of cream of mushroom instead of 2 cans of water and 1 can. It's currently cooking, and I'm eagerly looking forward to trying it. My sister highly recommends this recipe, so I'll share my thoughts after we finish our meal.

I have been using this for years! I love following the instructions exactly as written. Somehow, mine turn out even prettier than the pictures shown above. I like to shape them into oval patties.

I followed the recipe as instructed but also added some sliced onion and fresh mushrooms. My family absolutely loved it. It's a great comfort food option.

I absolutely adore this recipe! I've prepared it multiple times for my family, and it's always a hit! Recently, I decided to give it a little twist. Instead of making patties, I browned the hamburger, added the seasonings and soup, and then tossed in a bag of cooked egg noodles. I served it over mashed potatoes. It turned out to be a new family favorite that is super quick to make!
