Gramma's Apple Bread Pudding Recipe

Original recipe (1X) yields 8 servings
- 4 cups soft bread cubes
- 2 cups peeled and sliced apples
- cup raisins
- 1 cups milk
- 1 cup brown sugar
- cup butter
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- teaspoon vanilla extract
Vanilla Sauce:
- cup milk
- cup butter
- cup white sugar
- cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350F (175C) and grease a 7x11-inch baking dish.
Step 2: To make the bread pudding, combine the bread cubes, sliced apples, and raisins in a large bowl.
Step 3: In a small saucepan, combine the milk, brown sugar, and butter. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring until the butter is melted.
Step 4: Pour the milk mixture over the bread mixture in the bowl. Stir until the bread is evenly coated.
Step 5: Transfer the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 6: In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Pour this egg mixture evenly over the bread mixture in the baking dish.
Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the center is set and the apples are tender.
Step 8: While the bread pudding is baking, make the vanilla sauce. In a saucepan, combine the milk, butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Step 9: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 10: Serve the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding.
Cook's Note
I like to use rich breads like brioche, challah, or sourdough, especially if they are a day-old or toasted. You can also experiment with other spices in the custard mixture, such as nutmeg, allspice, or pumpkin pie spice.
