Grandma's Apple Dumplings Recipe
This simple, yet delightful dessert combines tender apple pieces, flaky crescent rolls, and a sweet, tangy sauce. Its perfect for a cozy night in or when youre in need of a quick dessert for a gathering. Enjoy the flavors of cinnamon, orange juice, and vanilla as they bake together into a delicious treat.
Ingredients:
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent rolls
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- cup butter
- cup white sugar
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
- Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and quarter the Granny Smith apples. Each apple piece will be wrapped in a crescent roll.
- Wrap the apples: Place one apple quarter into a crescent roll and wrap it up tightly. Make sure the seam is on the bottom, and place each wrapped apple in an 8x8-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon: Evenly sprinkle the cinnamon over the crescent rolls for that warm, aromatic flavor.
- Make the sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and orange juice. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
- Finish the sauce: Once it boils, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract for extra depth of flavor.
- Pour the sauce: Carefully pour the warm butter-sugar-orange sauce over the crescent rolls, ensuring they are covered well.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the apples are tender.
- Serve: Once baked, spoon some of the delicious sauce over the rolls before serving. Enjoy the warm, gooey goodness!

I thought this was a very nice dessert. It was very easy, but you will need to cover the rolls for the last 15 minutes of cooking. I will be making this again!!!

Loved this!! Will tweek next time by baking the apple dumplings on a metal pan and not in sauce to make the bottoms crispy. Used 4 cara cara oranges with lots of crushed orange segments in the juice -- will always keep crushed orange segments in but may reduce amount of butter in sauce. Will serve heated sauce (thickened a bit w/cornstarch) over cooled dumplings. A perfect dessert for brunch and anytime -- just so yummy and easy to prepare!!

It was good, as far as ease is concerned! I did not like the Orange juice flavor and they were sort of soggy. Made it again, used Ginger beer instead of the OJ. Did NOT cover with foil as some suggested. Used Pillsbury “Butter Flake” Crescents. Sprinkled sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg on top of the “bundles”, poured the butter, sugar, juice mix around the casserole instead of on top. Turned oven up for last 10 minutes to 375. Just took them out of the oven… They look beautiful, browned, and crispy! We shall see…more to come after tasting

This was really good but a bit too sweet for me. I will definitely make it again, but next time I'll reduce the sugar by 1/3 cup. I'll also cut the OJ/butter sauce in half (makes way more than you need!) and add a bit of cornstarch to thicken it up a bit so it's more like a glaze rather than a liquid.

I thought the syrup might be a bit thin so I added 1 teaspoon of corn starch to the vanilla, mixed it then added it to the butter, sugar, orange juice after they came to a boil. I think a little less sugar could be used for people who don’t want it too sweet. I wasn’t sure if it would be too strong an orange flavor but it was perfect. The syrup could be used on many things, ie pancakes, etc. It would just need to be reduced. Do use Granny Smiths, they work best. I took most of the syrup out at 30 minutes and cooked the dough and apples another 10 minutes to make the dough less soggy. Great recipes to make with kids!

I changed this into a peach dumpling recipe. I used one can of sliced peaches in 100% juice from Walmart. Placed 1-2 slices per roll. No OJ just the juice from the peaches. Boiled that with the butter and sugar and added the cinnamon with the mixture when the vanilla was added. Poured over the rolls and sprinkled brown sugar and cinnamon. Covered with aluminum foil for the first 20 min and cooked for 7 min without. PERFECT!

I would use apple cider or apple juice instead of the orange juice…I think it would make for a more “appley” flavor!

I love this dish! Only change I made was to use 1/2 cup orange juice, and 1/2 cup sugar. I added the cinnamon in with the butter/sugar/orange juice sauce, and poured it all over the dumplings. I covered with foil for 25 minutes, and baked an additional 10 minutes with the foil off. When serving, be sure to spoon the sauce from the dish over the dumpling and vanilla ice cream if you have it!

Added a small piece of fresh ginger to the sauce while cooking in saucepan. After adding the sauce to the dumplings I sprinkled sliced almonds on top and then baked according to directions.

Covered them after 15 minutes, added fresh whipped cream and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar before serving. Perfection!

I microwaved the sliced apples for 2 minutes before wrapping them in the crescent rolls and also poured a 12 oz. Mountain Dew around the outside of the dumplings before baking. SUPERB!!!!!

I made the recipe as indicated, except I used sunny D because I did not have orange juice turned out. Great. I will be making this again. It was truly very easy.

I prefer pie dough. Crescent rolls don't have the correct tastes . Sorry.
