Simple Custard Recipe
Ingredients (Original Recipe - 8 Servings)
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 4 large eggs
- cup white sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
Directions
Step 1: Gather all the ingredients. Make sure everything is within reach to ensure a smooth cooking process.
Step 2: In a saucepan, combine the milk, vanilla extract, and butter. Place over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let the mixture simmer, but be careful not to let it come to a full boil. Once it starts to bubble around the edges, remove the saucepan from heat.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar dissolves completely.
Step 4: Return the saucepan to low heat. Slowly pour the egg mixture into the hot milk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling. Continue to cook and whisk until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. This should take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 5: Once the custard has thickened, remove it from the heat. You can either serve it warm or transfer it to a large bowl and cover it with plastic wrap to cool before refrigerating.
Step 6: Let the custard cool to room temperature, then chill it in the refrigerator. Serve and enjoy!
Cooks Notes
You can adjust the sweetness by adding up to cup more sugar if you prefer a very sweet custard. Additionally, mixing in crushed pineapple or mashed banana can provide a delicious twist.
What is Custard?
Custard is a rich and creamy dessert made primarily from eggs, milk, and sugar. The eggs help achieve its velvety texture, while cornstarch or other thickeners may be used for additional richness in some recipes, like this one.
How to Store Custard
Once the custard has cooled, store it in an airtight in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm it on the stove over low heat.
Can You Freeze Custard?
Yes, you can freeze custard for up to 3 months. However, the texture may change slightly after thawing, so its best enjoyed fresh.

Excellent and straightforward recipe! The texture turned out perfect, with no signs of any scrambled eggs. I didn't have enough vanilla extract, so I only added half a tablespoon, but the vanilla flavor still came through nicely. Even without vanilla extract, I'm confident this custard would taste deliciously sweet and creamy. The sweetness level was spot on for me. Instead of increasing the sugar, I suggest adding fruit like sliced bananas to your individual serving. Just be sure to pay attention to a few key points for success: 1. Ensure the milk mixture is not too hot when incorporating the egg mixture. 2. Add the egg mixture slowly. I drizzled it in gradually, taking a few minutes to pour it all in. 3. Whisk continuously while adding the egg mixture, and keep whisking until the custard thickens. If it's taking longer than expected, slightly increase the heat and reduce it if it starts to boil. This custard is versatile and pairs well with fruits, oats, toast, and more. I'll definitely be making this again.

I absolutely loved this recipe! I was craving custard this morning and realized that most custard recipes involve baking in the oven, so I was thrilled to come across this stovetop version. The only modification I made was reducing the milk to 2 cups and using my hand mixer on low speed to mix in the cornstarch. The custard thickened in just a couple of minutes on the stove and tastes fantastic without any additional sugar. I can't wait to serve it with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top!

I mixed it for 45 minutes but it wouldn't thicken, so I added a lot of cornstarch but it still didn't thicken. I turned up the heat to 4, and it ended up curdling, but that was the only time it thickened. So I switched to a hand mixer, and it turned out well.

The sauce didn't thicken at all, even after adding a lot of corn starch. However, it does taste pretty good. I've been stirring for about an hour.
