Cook Time: 15 minutes
Classic Biscuits Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- cup shortening or butter
- 1 cup milk
Directions
- Gather all ingredients and preheat the oven to 425F (220C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually stir in the milk until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead it 15 to 20 times.
- Pat or roll the dough out to 1 inch thick.
- Using a large cutter or a juice glass dipped in flour, cut the dough into biscuits. Repeat until all the dough is used.
- Brush off any excess flour and place the biscuits onto an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 13 to 15 minutes, or until the edges begin to brown.
- Enjoy your homemade biscuits!
Recipe Tip
To prepare biscuits ahead of time, roll out the dough on aluminum foil that has been floured, lightly buttered, or coated with cooking spray. Roll up the foil and refrigerate. The biscuits may rise higher, as the baking powder will have more time to act.
