Overnight French Toast Casserole Recipe

Overnight French Toast Casserole Recipe

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 sticks butter, melted
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 2-inch slices
  • 2 cups milk
  • 8 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Aluminum foil

Directions:

  1. Pour the melted butter into an 11x15-inch baking dish, ensuring the bottom is evenly coated.
  2. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon over the melted butter, spreading it evenly.
  3. Arrange the bread slices on top of the sugar-cinnamon mixture, placing them closely together to cover the bottom of the dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Pour the milk mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure all pieces are soaked.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to soak up the mixture.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  8. Once the oven is preheated, place the covered casserole in the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed up and lightly golden on top.

Recipe Tip: For a richer flavor, you can substitute half-and-half for the milk.

**Disclaimer: I cut WAY back on the brown sugar. It calls for 2 cups of brown sugar which seemed like a lot for our taste, because we like to top with maple syrup. So for that reason, I only used a 1/2 cup of brown sugar. And for the 2 cups of milk, I did one cup milk, one cup half and half for a richer consistency and taste. It was delicious!! Next time I may cut my bread a bit thinner (maybe an inch and a half instead of 2 inches thick). And since all the yummy carmelized butter and sugar was on one side, I might try putting some of that mixture over the top too. But will definitely make this one again. Thanks for the recipe Tina!

I added cinnamon and nutmeg to the milk mixture I as sprinkled cinnamon sugar on top before I put in refrigerator. I let it stay refrigerator for 24 hours .I put in in on the 23rd and baked on Christmas morning. The sugar and butter made a crunchy caramel crust on the bottom . So delicious

Loved this! I used 1 cup of brown sugar, added a little nutmeg to the eggs along with the cinnamon, substituted 1 cup of 1/2 and 1/2 milk with 1 cup of heavy cream. I also used a combo of French bread and Potato bread. Excellent! Potato bread is a combo of white bread and brioche which gave it an added flavor! Great for Christmas morning breakfast! So easy!

I used one and a half sticks of butter, half-and-half instead of milk, and cooked it a bit longer before removing the foil. DELICIOUS. I brought it to a brunch that was laden with egg casseroles and this went in 10 minutes, guests were gushing over it's goodness. Definitely making it again!

Made as directed, but using oatmilk. To serve, flipped the slices over in the dish, so that brown sugar side was face up. Very good.

It was a hit. 4 people ate 3/4 of the pan. I added crumbled bacon on top and cut back on the brown sugar to 1/2 cup. Super easy and great results. It’s a keeper!

Used regular bread because didn't have the french. Reduced the butter to 1 stick. Reduced the brown sugar to 1/2 cup as another reviewer. Used reconstituted evaporated milk (NOT condensed milk). Will use recipe again and if I have fresh fruit or raisins I think this could be added as a middle layer for some variation. All enjoyed the recipe.

Baking now and smells amazing. I used a loaf of a maple nut flavor brioche, that I had on hand. I’ve made this before, and everyone loves it. Cut amount of brown sugar to half.

I followed the directions as written, cooked as described and when i took it out of the oven it still had not cooked. The bread had not soaked up the egg mixture had it browned on top. I cooked for an additional 20 minutes and had to continue cooking on broil to brown the top. 2 sticks of butter is way too much. However the taste I think would have been great had the butter not over powered it. I will try again with the recipe tweaked some with less butter and brown sugar.

This recipe is super simple and comes together quickly. I added a bit extra vanilla (.5 tsp), and I saved some of the brown sugar cinnamon mixture to sprinkle on top. No syrup needed! It was a hit with the household, and I'll make it for family visits for sure!

This was delicious. Disclaimer: I do not ever follow the amount that is said with the spices or seasonings so I probably had less brown sugar and added nutmeg to it (GAME CHANGER). I will use less egg and milk mixture because I do not like the middle mushy. I also cooked it longer (probably about 10 - 15 more minutes because it still was very mushy to us.

So easy and everyone loved it. The only change I made was to add more vanilla for flavor.
