Apple Pancakes Recipe

Origin History: Apple pancakes are a delightful variation of the traditional American pancake, incorporating the sweetness and tartness of apples. While pancakes themselves have roots in many cultures, apple pancakes have become especially popular in North America, particularly during the fall season. Apples, being a common autumn harvest, are a perfect match for this warm, comforting dish. The combination of apples and cinnamon in pancakes evokes the essence of autumn and is often associated with cozy breakfasts and brunches enjoyed with family and friends. Over the years, various versions of apple pancakes have appeared, often incorporating different apple varieties or even adding extra spices like nutmeg and ginger.

Regional Variations: Apple pancakes are especially beloved in the Northeastern United States, where apple orchards are abundant, and the fall harvest is celebrated with a variety of apple-based recipes. In the Midwest, similar recipes may include a topping of apple compote or even caramelized apples. In some regions of Europe, such as in Germany, apple-filled pancakes resemble apple fritters, though the method of preparation may vary. These pancakes can be adapted with ingredients such as whole wheat flour or substituted with dairy-free alternatives, making them versatile for various dietary preferences.

Differences from Similar Dishes: Apple pancakes stand out from regular pancakes by the inclusion of shredded or diced apples directly into the batter. This provides a unique texture and sweetness that regular pancakes lack. Additionally, the warm, comforting flavor of cinnamon and the natural juiciness of apples make them distinct from other fruit-based pancakes, such as banana pancakes or berry pancakes. The apples in apple pancakes create a moist, slightly tangy contrast to the fluffy batter, giving the dish a fresh and vibrant twist compared to standard pancakes.

Where It's Served: Apple pancakes are commonly served for breakfast or brunch, particularly in the fall months when apples are in season. They are often enjoyed with a drizzle of maple syrup, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream. In some cases, apple compote or a spiced syrup may be added to enhance the flavor. These pancakes are also popular during festive seasons like Thanksgiving or special family gatherings, making them a favorite choice for celebratory meals. They are perfect for a cozy weekend morning or a hearty holiday breakfast spread.

Interesting Facts: Did you know that apples are not only delicious but also highly nutritious? They are rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. The apples used in apple pancakes provide a natural sweetness, allowing you to reduce added sugars in the recipe. Additionally, pancakes themselves have been enjoyed in various forms for centuries. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans, are believed to have made early versions of pancakes, often using grains and water, much simpler than the sweet treats we know today. Apple pancakes, as we know them now, evolved with the introduction of refined ingredients and the popularity of sweet breakfast dishes in modern American cuisine.

If the pancake batter is too thick, you can thin it out by adding a little extra milk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency.

I altered these to make them less caloric, and they still came out fabulous! My daughter loved them. I substituted 2 Tbsp. Splenda for the sugar, 1/8 c. applesauce for half of the butter, two egg whites for the one egg and used nonfat milk. I also doubled the cinnamon. I ate mine completely plain - was almost like dessert instead of breakfast!

Our go-to pancake recipe! Made it gluten-free for celiac daughter by replacing flour with Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose gluten-free flour (and sifting first), using two eggs and beating eggs whites stiff separately and folding in for lighter result (since gluten free things don't rise as much), and using oil instead of butter since gluten-free things are drier. Doubled cinnamon and sugar for flavour. Smash hit. Best gluten-free pancakes ever.

This was a delicious and easy recipe for a birthday weekend brunch. I added a tsp of vanilla extract to the liquids, and a couple Tbsp of apple juice to thin the batter a little to spread easier on my griddle. The suggestion of spiced syrup by the author was spot on, I heated 3/4 cup pancake syrup with 1/2 tsp cinnamon and ground nutmeg stirred in. Yummy!

I doubled all of the recipes ingredients and tripled the apples as I used 2 small macouns and a small yellow apple I had left over and added 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Also, I didn’t shred the apples but sliced them into thin dice size and just loved the pieces of apple in nearly every bite! Will definitely make this recipe again!!

Instead of 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, I used 1/4 cup of each ingredient, organic flaxseed, hemp seeds & rice cauliflower, 3/4 cups of whole wheat flour. I added 1 tbsp of organic chia seeds. I replaced the 1 tbsp of white sugar with organic raw honey.

I used lactose free milk and it worked really well with this recipe. The middle of mine were a little doughy so I just turned down the temperature a little and it worked fine. Other than that, they were really good!

These were the best pancakes I've ever made, while making it my own and gluten free. They were fluffy with the perfect hint of sweetness and it created those bubbles in the batter I love seeing when it hits the heat. These are my adjustment: 1 tbsp of butter instead of a 1/4 cup 1/2 buttermilk (it was left over and needed to be used) 1/2 almond milk 1 tbsp brown sugar instead of white 2 tbsp of coconut flakes (also left over) 1 1/4 cups all-purpose gluten free flour 1/2 tsp festive spice ( blend of allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg) instead of 1/4 tsp cinnamon

I separated the egg and whipped the egg white until soft peaks formed then folded them into the batter. Light. Fluffy. Delicious.

The apples made these pancakes so moist! I love the hint of apple flavor throughout. I just used a medium sized apple, but I think measuring to a cup would have been the right move to get more apple flavor. I also added a dash of salt to the batter.

These apple pancakes are absolutely delicious! They were super quick and easy to make, and had the perfect texture. I was worried they might be a bit too soft or soggy with adding in the grated apple--but that fear was unfounded! They came out great! They were easy to cook, and I'm very pleased with how they turned out. The cinnamon syrup really takes them over the top--thanks to the recipe author for that suggestion! And thank you for sharing your recipe!

This is a great recipe. Good flavor, texture, and room for ideas to add other things such ad nuts and/or raisins. My husband could not stop saying how good it was.... served it with ham and eggs. Used honey as a topping.

I added added 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. I let batter stand for about 10 minutes whilst I made eggs and bacon. I intend to add vanilla to recipe next time.

This wasn't quite what I was looking for. It was better. These will definitely be made over and over again, especially during the fall apple season.

It was pretty good! I would recommend making pancakes 1/2 cup instead of 1/4 cup. Quite filling! Great aftertaste. It tastes just like apple pie!! I used whole-wheat flour, however. Halle~~
